John Ford directed this outdoor adventure set in the American Colonial period. Gilbert and Lana Martin (Henry Fonda and Claudette Colbert) are a young couple trying to make a home in New York State's Mohawk Valley, but repeated attacks by Indians drive them, along with other settlers in the valley, into a nearby fort, where they watch helplessly as the natives lay waste to their farms and cabins. A spinster with a large farm, Sarah McKlennar (Edna May Oliver), comes to their rescue when she hires Gilbert to work as a field hand and gives the Martins a place to stay. The rugged life of the farm and frontier doesn't always sit well with Lana, who was raised in wealthy and comfortable circumstances; in time she develops a thicker skin and learns to love their new life in the Mohawk Valley, especially after giving birth to their first son. Gilbert joins the militia, who must do battle both with the local Indian tribes and the British soldiers who are provoking them to battle. Gilbert returns wounded, and as he recuperates, a healthy crop rises in the fields, but their satisfaction is short lived when the Indians once again hit the warpath. 1939 was a stellar year for John Ford; along with this highly successful adventure tale, which was nominated for three Academy Awards, Ford also released the ground-breaking western Stagecoach. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

A true John Ford movie - entertaining, enjoyable, and with a good ending! It's a pleasure to watch and makes you feel good when it's over. Definitely worth watching!

I saw this movie on "Million Dollar Movie" on WOR-TV in New York when I was about 8 years old. I liked it then, and I like it better each time I see it. This is a must see for someone interested in Revolutionary War history in the Northeast.

I think this movie is a classic and one that few know or remember. I am from the area where this all took place and is a great one. I would however love to see a remake of this wonderfully historical time..

Great location color photography, wonderful characters ,and a vivid portrayal of a time in American history many citizens know little or nothing about. Most folks have no idea that Indian battlles galore happened in good old New York state. A true classic.

Good Movie. It's hard to believe that we were that young back when this movie was first made.

My 94 yr old stepfather, Rex Ravelle, was in this movie. He played one of the indians chasing Henry Fonda through the forest and the fields. The muscular one. We rented the movie so we could watch it with him and actually enjoyed the whole film. I didn't realize the movie would be in color - the digital restoration process made it look much more modern. It was a clean movie. Good for Christians. Edna May Oliver I recognized from cartoons! Definitely worth renting.

This movie was just as so many movies made in 1939. Quality. Even though it followed historical guidelines, it was not only entertaining but the actors, Henry Fonda, Claudette Colbert and Edna May Oliver were superb, as usual. Also after seeing most of Ms. Colbert's movies, this one showed her beauty as no other has. In all, this action packed movie was excellent.

Convincing panoramic vistas of colonial upstate New York, period costumes, sets and props, and John Ford's directorial genius lend authenticity and (some relative credibility) to this Revolutionary War era historical novel. If you have an attention span that extends beyond a minute or two, you will thoroughly enjoy the dramatic action sequences, as well as the perfectly timed comic relief delivered throughout the movie by the excellent supporting cast, which includes many "genuine Indians" (indigenous Native Americans). The chase scene (on foot, no less!) with a young and seemingly undernourished Henry Fonda being tracked by a trio of very fit "heathen savages" serves as a template for understated cinematographic excitement. Keep an "eye out" for a very sinister John Carradine (real life father of David from TV's "Kung Fu" series and the "Kill Bill" movies, and Robert of TV's "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids" series and the "Revenge of the Nerds" movies.

I love classic films. I love Henry Fonda and like Claudette Colbert, and I really appreciate John Ford's work. I am even fond of historical pictures. But this film was just awful. It was boring and cheesy and corny. The end even tries to get a patriotic note in there. I've never seen Fonda so naive and then unconvincing when he becomes world-weary. Two stars, though, for the fabulously entertaining supporting cast, especially Edna May Oliver as the gruff old widow with the heart of gold; she steals every scene!
