The scenery and costumes were beautiful and idyllic. It gives way to heighten one's imagination in numerous manners I truly did enjoy it. To feel the heat and chemistry between the King and his Obsession was what made the movie for me.
The movie is symbolic of the universal law~what goes around, comes around. Each main character comes full circle. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

The plot was predictable, but the costume, scenery and acting was very good. One very important thing that I thought was lacking was that I didn't feel like it took place a long time ago. I won't rent it again but it's worth watching once. I didn't need subtitles which was great. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

I was expecting a near-pornographic movie and discovered a visually stunning work of art instead. The colors are incredibly vivid, the acting is top-notch, and the plot is about much more than physical passion, which one might expect from the title. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? One of my favorite lines from the movie, "All my life I have lived with your used things, now all your life you will live with mine." One of the characters is talking about her friends' husband here! This movie might make you laugh and cry as well (it did for me). EXCELLENT!!! DON'T MISS Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More Ironically, people who like to see Asian culture as "exotic" (as if that's a compliment) seem to like this film. I love Mira Nair, but this one is just sorely lacking story depth and the kind of fully believable character development most of her other films have so much of. It doesn't really pull you in in a visceral way--and I normally get completely drawn into her stories. I found myself rolling my eyes at most of the characters at different points. There was a ton of potential--all the building blocks were there for something great--but instead, it just seemed like SUCH a waste of talent. While all the actors did an excellent job with very difficult roles, I don't get why, in a period piece in India, Mira used a half-white actress and a part-Malaysian/Fijian actor as leads...I guess this is supposed to be more accessible to a Western audience (and I guess she did this in "Water" also)...still. :( Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL?
