Scream is at once a slasher film and a tongue-in-cheek position paper on the "dead teenagers" movies of the late 1970s/early 1980s that plays as half-parody, half-tribute. Sydney Prescott (Neve Campbell) is having a rough time lately: she's still getting over the brutal rape and murder of her mother a year ago, and now one of her friends (Drew Barrymore) has been killed by a lunatic who harassed her with terrifying phone calls, then stabbed her to death while wearing a Halloween costume. Soon Sydney is receiving similar phone calls, quizzing her on the arcane details of such films as Friday the 13th and Prom Night, and is attacked by the same cloaked maniac. With her father missing, she has hardly anyone on her side except her best friend Tatum (Rose McGowan) and Tatum's brother Dewey (David Arquette), a half-bright cop. As for the murderer, it could be any number of people: Syd's father; her cute but overly intense boyfriend Billy (Skeet Ullrich); Tatum's goofball boyfriend Stuart (Matthew Lillard); or Randy (Jamie Kennedy), who works at the local video store and seems to like horror movies just a little too much. Much like Halloween, Scream spawned a series of sequels and inspired a large number of similar films -- its original working title, Scary Movie, became the title of the 2000 parody film by Damon Wayans. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

A good teen horror movie, because of the sly references to the other horror movies. The acting was so-so, but its not supposed to be perfect. It was good for a horror movie, and that in itself was a miracle. The movie kept me guessing to the end, and it had a surprisingly funny climactic scene. If you haven't seen this Wes Craven thriller classic, rent it. That is, if you like scary movies. Do you like scary movies? Ha-Ha!

I watched it when it was first released in 1996. It went straight to the top of my list of movies to buy. I love all of the "Scream" movies almost as much as I love the Holloween Movies with "Michael Myers"

A perfect example of a Wes Craven film is this one. A very fun movie to watch and is pretty gory. The actors are very well in the movie but it seems like one of those soaps during the day. Yet it is very suspenseful and it is hard to guess out the killers.

Psycho and hallloween were in inspirations, although the movie isn't as good as the predesseosors. The movie does deliver the goods. Its a modern classic.

Not the best Wes Craven movie out there but still really good, not a big fan of Neve Campbell or i would of gave it 5 stars. the movie as a whole will keep you on the edge of your seat in a who done it type thriller, i say thriller because horror to me involves some kind of demon, monster, mutant, blob ... nvm Neve campbell is in it so yeah its a horror. GO DOOFY!

This is the best horror movie there is! Its funny in a way and kind of stupid but it all makes sense at the end.

The gimmick is that it's a horror movie that's aware that it's a horror movie. All the characters have seen lots of horror movies and they know all the rules--like anyone who leaves the room and says "I'll be right back" is going to get killed, or the only teenager who can live to the end of the movie is the one who hasn't had sex yet. Fine, that could be a clever premise. Except that the movie doesn't really do anything with it. In spite of it's supposed self-awareness, "Scream" degenerates into just another horror movie clone--pretty much exactly like every single other mad-slasher, pick them off one by one until the final confrontation movie you've seen. O.K.--maybe it's slightly better than "Halloween" or "Friday the 13th." But not by much. And at least those films aren't pretentious enough to pretend that they're innovative. Bottom line: if you like teen slasher movies, you'll like this one. If you're looking for something that transcends the genre, this isn't it.
