to enjoy this film: the triple tragedies (the Russian Revolution and subsequent totalitarian state with
mindless adherence to nonsense phraseology (e.g., "the personal life is dead"), the too short time
for Zhivago with Lara, and the abandonment of his wife, Tonya, and child (underplayed in the film)),
the cinematography, and the musical score. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More Adventure, Romance, Betrayal, Tradgedy, this classic has it all and more! It's true, being born before 1960 might help some to appreciate the events portrayed in Dr. Z. I would suggest that you read a history book now and then. If teachers were paid more, maybe we could have history taught in the schools again. Just like when I was growing up way back in the 60's!
BTW, what is a "stink pot" anyway Matthew? Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More Here we have a classic case of Much Ado About Nothing; except, in this case, it's much ado about something, but not something you expect. I'll bet you have heard of this movie all of your life. I had. So I watched it, prepared for three hours of history, and that is indeed what I got. On a historic level, this movie is fairly decent, presenting chunks of Russia's history with expertise. And I won't argue that it's classically wrought, complete with intermission and overture. But, folks, you might want to take a breather in between. This movie, for all the stir it made, is the definition of underwhelming. For one, it is far too long, and the understory that holds the main story together is constructed far too distantly. Secondly, it gets boring, and the acting is annoying, excepting Omar Sharif and Rod Stewart. Thirdly, there is absolutely no chemistry between Zhivago and his mistress, an unfortunate blow, as that is what the movie concerns itself with. B-...possibly a C+ Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No
