Four men just barely on the right side of the law step into a web of danger and corruption in this drama. In the early 1950s, Max Hoover (Nick Nolte) is a detective with the Los Angeles Police Department who leads what's been dubbed "the hat squad," a group of sharp-dressed cops who are ordered to stamp out organized crime using any means necessary, with legality and delicacy not much of an issue. Hoover and his partners Ellery Coolidge (Chazz Palminteri), Eddie Hall (Michael Madsen), and Arthur Relyea (Chris Penn) are looking into the brutal murder of a young woman named Allison Pond (Jennifer Connelly). In the course of their investigation, they discover that Allison had a lively sexual history, and she possessed explicit films of herself with her lovers, including Gen. Thomas Timms (John Malkovich), leader of the newly-formed Atomic Energy Commission. Timms becomes a key suspect, and he reveals the first of a long trail of troubling secrets, but Hoover has secrets of his own that he's trying to keep covered in the process -- including the fact that he and Allison were once an item. Popular vocalist Aaron Neville has a cameo as a singer at a night spot. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

I thought this was a pretty decent movie. Lots of big name actors before they got old and fat. I almost didn't recognize Malkovich. A good murder mystery. The ending is great. Conelly was hot

Weak considerijng the cast. Connelly is smoking. Maybe worth the rent. The title has really nothing to do with the movie. Chinatown blows this away for a 40's LA movie.

It starts out so slow I wondered if it was going anywhere at all. Turns out that the story offers clues throughout to help you figure out the crime. It's like Dateline NBC but without all the fake drama! Connelly still had her baby fat. She's gorgeous. The ALL-STAR cast played their parts well and none left character during the whole film.

This an action movie and fighting movie and Nick Nolte seems to always have a cigarette in his mouth or finger. The cops seem to solve problems by beating people up.

Good movie--Nick Nolte does great job and it entertaining to see movie stars much younger. the plot is entertaining with enough action to keep you watching. And Jeniffer Connelly is impressive.. watch it.

A great film with the right combination of chosen actors, based in 1940's Hollywood --neither person tries to be "over the top" in his or her roles drawing the viewer into the characters' fragile lives. I was reminded also of Nick Nolte's former greatness as a star before real-life drug addictions destroyed his borderline looks -- his charisma, as is everyone's is palpable.

With all the great actors in this thing, they should have had a masterpiece on their hands. But no, there's wasted performances, surpressed perfomances and the movie is quite predictalbe.

Predictable, boring, and below average. Save your time and get L.A. Confidential. If you've already seen L.A. Confidential, don't bother with this one - you'll only be disappointed by this inferior period-piece/cop-mystery.
