"I'm gonna dance," Nomi Malone (Elizabeth Berkley) insists in the opening scene of Showgirls, and dance she does. In this quasi-update of All About Eve, Nomi is a drifter whose sole ambition is to headline the "Goddess" topless dance show at the Stardust in Las Vegas. Of course, even Nomi must pay her dues, and she does so at the Cheetah, grinding poles and lap dancing her way to a future. Fortunately, her roommate, Molly, works at the Stardust and invites Nomi to see the show, where she meets Crystal Conners (Gina Gershon, in the Bette Davis role), with whom she immediately forms a love/hate relationship. Nomi soon learns what she must do to get ahead, and the rest of the film documents her cat-like crawl up the showgirl ladder of success. Directed by Paul Verhoeven, (Robocop, Basic Instinct, The Fourth Man), Showgirls was conceived as the first big-budget "adult" film since 1977's Caligula, and the first such production to wear the NC-17 rating; its failure at the box-office discouraged further attempts at large-scale adult productions. ~ Dylan Wilcox, Rovi

Gotta admit - it has energy. Elizabeth's portrayal pulls out all the stops. Technically, it's beautifully made.

Why is this movie that bad and revolting? While it has bad acting and an unbelievable plot, many movies have those characteristics. There is a darker reason why Showgirls is so bad. The people portrayed on Showgirls never showed affection. Women were portrayed as lesser individuals who were shallow and stupid. Men were crass uncaring jerks with power. This mean spirited portrayal of humanity was far more offensive than any nudity. I believe Showgirls is the second worst movie ever made. Only "The Future" is worse.

I don't know why I even watched this movie all the way through. Elizabeth Berkley's acting was wooden except when she was cursing, throwing things, or actually dancing.

Great movie and no one wants to admit to it but it is a fact.. This had a profound effect on me even after 16 years gone by I still think about this movie. All I can say is this movie has a very strong point to make at the ending, and if you don't get the point then there is no hope for you. Why have I not seen more of these same actresses in more recent films through out the years ???

Love or hate it you can't argue that this movie (now almost 20 years old)has an energy that movies of this genre' haven't been able to capture since then (Think: the forgettable and limp "Nine"-the juvenile, brain damaging "Stepup" series-in fact just about every dance movie made since then-now that's depressing!). The lethal combination of Verhoeven and Eszterhas makes for one Big entertaining in-your-face movie with hilarious quotable lines, lots of nudity (all of which seems perfectly normal and if it isn't who cares) and raunchy dialogue. Berkley should be saluted for taking on a tough part and giving it her all. Whatever her limitations as an actress she more than makes up for it with sheer energy and courage. if you haven't seen it and don't mind adult dialogue and lots of nudity make time for one entertaining Guilty pleasure of a movie and forget what the critics said about it!

I think I saw this before but a cleaner version. Lots of good T&A and some foul mouth women. Good show though.
