This action-packed sci-fi thriller is set upon the planet Sirius 6B in the year 2078. The planet has been decimated by a vast nuclear war. Many have survived, but their continued survival is threatened by the dreaded screamers, strange shape-changing mechanical creatures who use razor sharp knives to hack up any life-form in their way. They earned their name because when they kill, they make a horrible high pitched sound. The first screamer makes its appearance as a lone soldier approaches a bunker. He has come to deliver an important message from the NEB to its enemy the Alliance. Unfortunately, the low flying screamer gets to the soldier first, and quicker than Popeil's Vegamatic, slices and dices the fellow into tiny pieces. Later a jet crashes near the bunker. Aboard it is a nuclear reactor. One man survives the crash. The man, Ace, knows how to make a bomb with the reactor. Alliance-leader Col. Joseph Hendricksson takes Ace and they travel across the great irradiated desert to met with the NEB leaders. Along the way they find a small boy and though they don't want to, bring him along. Unfortunately, by the time they get to the NEB headquarters, the screamers have killed all but Becker, a tough soldier, Ross, who is nearly mad, and sexy smuggler Jessica. When Becker and Ross see the boy, they think he is a screamer and kill him. They are right and soon the little group find themselves surrounded by the hellish killing machines, all of which have taken the shapes of small boys. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

The story line was definitely unique and interesting. It is set on this planet where these underground robotic "beasts" attack humans. The story will keep you gripped to your chair, however the ending was very very disappointing. Its a shame that putting in all the effort into this film and then giving a B-grade film ending. My impression is that they wanted to release a sequel...but is there one that exists?

"What's the matter, you got a piano tied to your butt?" That's one example of the awful dialogue. There are a few dozen more if you actually watch the film. Normally I love terrible B-grade sci-fi, but sometimes a film just rubs me the wrong way. I can easily sit through a viewing of a film from the underwater nazi zombie genre and other schlock, but the writing for this movie was horrible. I've read the short story it was based on, and it was great. However, it was a short story for a reason. It doesn't justify a full movie. Effects and general "look" of the film is okay, but the film gets a triple FAIL on the dialogue. It was SO bad (without trying to be) that I had to take a break halfway in and watch the other half later... after my strength returned. If you want something a little higher quality and a little more entertaining go get something from TROMA. At least they have crappy dialogue on purpose.

If you are a sci-fi lover, then you must check this one out. It has a great plot, there are a few far out ideas, but that's what makes it a good sci-fi flick...ENJOY!

I just love this movie. Aside from the annoying screams of the screamers, this movie has one of the best plots of any sci-fi movie ever made. It keeps you moving through the rather complicated story at a fast pace yet also does a great job of building the charactors along the way, hardly leaving a stone unturned. The diversity of the different charactors almost doesn't fit well with the over all plot, but after the ending you will understand why. I was very hopefull that they would make a sequel to this...and I still am! Look how long it took to make a sequel to Alien...

I like this movie, very suspenseful. I believe the sequel is Screamers: the hunting. I have to watch that.

Has anyone actually been able to rent this from Blockbuster online? It's been in my queue for months. It's still listed as a very long wait. Is this not supposed to be a rental site? So many titles unavailable or very long wait. No wonder Blockbuster is having problems. Netflix is starting to seem like a better choice.

I liked this movie. Very underrated. Original script with good acting. Needed some sexier scenes for the teen crowd, but overall a better than average B movie. I found the similarities between this story-line and Phillipo Dicks "Second Variety" story in the "Minority Report and other stories" novel (along with 'Paycheck', 'Minority Report' and 'We can remember it for you' (AKA Total Recall) which all became movies). Does anyone know if this is the last story in the book to be made a movie?

The sets are good, the story is solid, special effects, for the time, is good. However, while I enjoyed the film, I was hoping for more action and for the movie to tie up lose ends.As another reviewer noted, perhaps a sequel was in mind. If you like sci-fi watch it.
