Haunted (1995)
Member Rating:
Adapted from the novel by James Herbert, this subtle, melancholy British chiller owes a great deal to Henry James's The Turn of the Screw. The story opens with a chilling prologue in 1905 England, in which a young boy fails to prevent the accidental drowning of his sister. As a young man, David (Aidan Quinn) is still tormented by guilt and remorse. After several years in the United States, David returns to England to continue his work researching and debunking claims of the supernatural. His latest investigation into the alleged haunting of Edbrook Manor -- at the behest of the Marriell's family nanny, Tess (Anna Massey) -- introduces him to the eccentric company of the lovely Christina Mariell (Kate Beckinsale) and her brothers Robert and Simon (Anthony Andrews and Alex Lowe). Despite repeated warnings from Tess that mischievous spirits are at work, David refuses to concede that the house is haunted -- until the angelic vision of his drowned sister reveals the true nature of his strange hosts. The rich period setting lends a classy Merchant Ivory touch to the film, and the high production values indicate the guiding hand of executive producer Francis Ford Coppola, but the performances are a bit too cold and detached to provide any legitimate tension. Fans of the classic 1961 film The Innocents will not find the central mystery particularly challenging. ~ Cavett Binion, Rovi

Well-made scary film, with an absolutely phenomenal cast! Everyone excels here, and the director certainly kept you guessing throughout. The ending really gets you! Some great chills and thrills, if you like a rather elegant ghost story.

I thought this movie was very orignal and the acting was very good. Loved the setting of the mansion by the lake. Make sure to see this one.

Its a little slow at the begining and tends to drag in places. I found it easy to figure out the main twists, however, the ending was unexpected. It has a mushy love story mixed into it so there's a little something for everyone type of thing. I didnt find this movie scary in the least. I'd say its a mid-week rental not something for the weekend...

Hardly the best ghost movie in the world but I liked it overall. The scenery was very nice and I thought the acting was good. The story twist surprised me as well...I never caught on to it. Worth seeing on a boring, rainy afternoon.

I thought this movie was a little boring for the first half but the second half picked up and was more enjoyable. It had a rather unsuspecting ending.

Sort of predictable, not too exciting.

I really liked this story, there was an actual story with much winding and twisting. Was a lot of fun to watch. I think Aldan Quinn is handsome anyway. Just the right amount of tension and confusion and intrigue in this movie, great for a rainy night.

Almost gave this movie 3 stars just because Aidan Quinn is wonderful watch - good movie or bad. This a few tiny lil boos in it - but overall?...terrible (really really bad) script - Good acting by the cast members but nothing could of saved this truly all over the place misguided storyline & script. To it's credit is was filmed very beautifully. The twist and plot....done over and over and over and over again - no surprises here - you will have it figured out fairly quickly, and say to yourself as I did, "noottt again - same old story". Another note - this movie has some very adult themes to it - as well as some fairly graphic sexual content. Not for da kiddies - but in all truthfulness - not for anyone...Rent "The Others" instead - same storyline done much (much) better.
