***Possible Spoilers***When you say the words Robert Downey, Jr, Meg Ryan and period piece in the same sentence it rightly brings a cringe to most people. This film however was surprisingly good. Downey's over the top performance worked well for an over the top character and Ryan pulls off the image of damaged, fragile insanity with convincing ease. But it is the supporting cast that truly made this movie wonderful. Sam Neill, Ian McKellan, Hugh Grant and David Thewlis give exceptional performances.

The entire first half of this move was a joke. I almost stopped watching! But as soon as Meg Ryan entered the scene, it became a heartwarming and meaningful movie. I smiled, I cried. It turned out, in the end, that this movie wasn't a waste of my time after all.
