Prehistoric and Intergalactic megamonsters beware! Japan's jet-propelled, flying giant turtle returns, after a 14-year absence in this deliberately retro Japanese sci-fi fantasy, to defeat his giant nemesis Gyaos and to keep the world safe for children everywhere. The trouble begins when a plutonium transport is botched; somehow this disturbs an atoll, causes the disappearance of a professor and an entire village, and reawakens three Gyaos, gigantic flying lizard things with enormous wing-spans who fly about Japan making a lot of noise and causing infinite destruction. The clever scientists observing the birds decide that there is only one structure in Japan big enough to cage the pesky supercreatures: the Fukuoka Dome baseball stadium which has a roof that can open and close. All of the ensuing hullabaloo manages to awaken Gamera, the monster turtle, from his long slumber. He promptly destroys the stadium and releases two of the Gyaos. Disaster ensues as he and the scientists endeavor to stop the avian invaders from destroying the entire world. The film's exciting, climactic battle between Gamera and Gyaos takes place in the smoldering ruins of Tokyo. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

This movie has all essense what the new Godzilla series starts 1984 lost. We gave big applause when this was shown in theaters in Japan. This and next episode (Attack of Legion) are the most my favorite Japanese monster movies.

At the time Godzilla was starting to go out of fashion, rival studio, Daiei, decided to revive their classic monster for the 90's. And that was Gamera. For this new movie, there were new minatures and suits and explanations. Such as the monster's origins. Gamera fights his old rival Gyoas. It is the monster mayhem mash of the 60's being put into a new level. It is edge-of-your-seat action and it is mind-blowing. This movie is worth watching. I highly recommend it!

Movie can be slightly slow at times, but was overall entertaining. Not as good as the second Gamera film that follows it, but better than the third.

As always, low-budget and campy compared to a Hollywood movie production, but that just adds to the charm of Gamera. Having been a fan of the Gamera series since I was a child, I am very pleased with this modern version. I can easily recommend Gamera:Guardian Of The Universe (1995) to any fan of Japanese giant monster films. However, there is one caveat for Blockbuster Online customers : as of 03-2009 Blockbuster has this listed as a 3 disc set, but it is not! Be sure to Unlock the set and order ONLY disc number one (1), or you get the same feature three times...:) I have written to Blockbuster Support, maybe they'll correct the situation.

If you grew up on monster movies as a kid, you'll love this. Guardian of the Universe is the first of 3 movies from Kaneko (who also directed a really good Godzilla movie) The movie combines CGI with well done costumes and sets. A good story line keeps it interesting for parents while the kids root for Gamera. If you like this one, order the other 2 that follow. Could be scary for little kids

AWESOME!@ Gamera Rocks ( but Godzilla is Better!) This was the first Gamera movie I saw. Now, i'm 9 years old and mabye I'm a little tired of Godzilla and gamera but EVERYONE has to love Gamera! Yes you're right Gamera is the Giant Fireball breathing Turtle That is now 45 years old! This one was an Awesoime movie. I'm DYING to See Attack Of Legion but it's unavailable at the store. But before we talk about legion , Let's just stick with Gamera and Gaos. Gaos was not a tuff foe to Gamera. gamera is way cooler. But the most coolestOne of All is The Toho monster Godzilla! Wait. is my mind wandering off somewere? Cause if it is just let me know cause We were here to talk about gamera in THe First PLACE! Before I go , I just want to say what I came here to say. I loved this movie and I would TOTALLY recomed it! Well I better Go before I start Talking Bout Godzilla. See Ya!
