Good gorillas meet bad gorillas while human beings search for treasure in this jungle advnture saga. R.B. Travis (Joe Don Baker) is the ruthless head of Travi-Com, a telecommunications firm on the cusp of a major breakthrough in laser communications technology. However, Travis needs diamonds to finish the project, so he sends a group of men to Zaire, where he's told that a large supply of the gems can be easily found. When the men go missing, Travis sends his trusted assistant Karen Ross (Laura Linney), a one-time CIA associate, into the jungle to find both his staff and the jewels. Hoping to keep her mission a secret, Karen travels to Zaire in the company of Peter (Dylan Walsh), a researcher on primate development who is hoping to return Amy, a gorilla who has been taught sign language and can "speak" English with the help of a glove-controlled computer device. Also travelling with them is Herkermer (Tim Curry), a Romanian with a secret agenda: he's convinced that Amy can guide him to the Lost City of Zinj, where he believes that King Solomon's Mines are located. Upon arrival, the group is met by Monroe Kelly (Ernie Hudson), a self-described "great white hunter who happens to be black," and they discover that the jungle holds a menace that they weren't counting on: a tribe of bloodthirsty gray gorillas. Congo was based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Michael Crichton. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Despite not better than Michael Crichton's last hit, Jurassic Park, Congo is still an unbelivable masterpiece Crichton has ever done. With a fantastic story as well as some tremendous special effects, Congo is golden epic and golden outstanding!

Great goofy sci fi adventure. They don't make movies this fun anymore. I haven't read the book but I assume it has to be better but for a goofy action adventure the movie is sure worth the watch.

This movie is only terrible if taken seriously, but with actors like Bruce Campbell and Tim Curry in the cast. No true fan of the b-movie actors would mind a bad story to go along with their cheery cameos and somewhat interesting screenplay.

I had watched the movie before and remembered really enjoying it. So when my kids were of an age that I thought they might be old enough to enjoy it, I raved about it and watched it again with them. I guess with movies like Avatar out it's hard to appreciate the grey gorillas. Still, it was a great book and a good movie so....put it on your list!

True, this movie is completly ridiculus, but SOME of the actors make this worth something. Fun trip through the jungle. To the person above me: You obviously haven't seen any of Bruce Campbell movies

For a person who has never read Michael Chrichton's book, this movie is fair, but for someone who enjoys Chrighton's writing, the movie was very poorly done. While movies made from books are almost never quite as good as the book itself, this movie goes to the limit to ruin a good storyline. The changes from the book were really poor deviations (except for the change in Ross character) and the extreme tension and excitement from the book are really lacking in the movie. Overall, this is not a movie I would choose to see again. Read the book. Skip the movie.

How many bad sci-fi movies have been unleashed from his books? This one is so bad, it's not even a good kind of bad where you can laugh at it. It's just stupid, and it's shocking how B-movie king Bruce Campbell (in a wasted cameo) and respected actress Laura Linney could have been subjected to this. There were moments that could've been lifted from E.T., just swap Amy the fake-looking gorilla out with the alien and bingo, E.T. rip-off. It wasn't scary, the special effects were bad, most of it even the pseudo-intellectual ideas are so old and derivative there are countless bad movies and TV shows that cover the same ground, only this movie does it worst.
