Camp Hope is a summer camp for fat kids; it is also the locale of this Disney family comedy. All of the kids at Camp Hope have a weight problem. It is the one place they can go without feeling different. But when the previous owners declare bankruptcy, the camp is purchased by an obnoxious fitness freak who becomes obsessed with changing his chubby charges into budding body builders. He immediately begins serving them low calorie foods and subjecting them to rigorous exercises. Part of his motivation is greed: he is in the process of writing a book, and filming an infomercial on weight loss. The boys at camp rebel and mayhem ensues. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi
This movie is one of those great family movies from the '90s. It is wonderful for many reasons. Ben Stiller is genius in it--this is the type of Stiller humor that is so great (akin to Zoolander, Starsky and Hutch, and Dodgeball). The story is an underdog tale! I love it when nerds or "losers" get to beat the "cool" kids. The fat humor may be a little un-pc, but if anything it is due to the over the top style of humor and not due to any kind of maliciousness. It is so cute!
This was a funny movie. It started with a chuckle and ended with side splitting laughter. Great upbeat movie. It's main theme is to respect yourselves no matter who you are and to develop the confidence to stand up for what you believe in. Movie was great for adults, looks good for teenagers, but it had some parts that may be questionable for younger children that you may not want them to mimic. An example is one scene were the camp director does a situp right into a view of the big crator on the moon.
I let this movie run for about a minute and a half. The opening scene in the hallway made me think, "I expected juvenile, but not quite this juvenile." The next scene made me think, "I'm not doing juvenile, crude, stupid, and immoral all together."
To me, you can do juvenile without displaying people as absolutely without any self-control or humanity.
Just plain fun. Predictable and silly, but good for a family movie night with a bowl of popcorn and fluffy pillows. All ages will identify with the emotions and empowerment of the underdogs. Enough excitement and "gross stuff" to keep pre-teens and teens interested.
The only good thing about this movie is Ben Stiller. Ben stiller was freaky in this movie so basically that there is nothing good about this movie. It was boring and not funny. The first 10 minutes kept me entertained than after that i lost my mind. It was not funny and really boring. I have no idea why people like this! SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When Ben Stiller leaves the camp i thought the movie would end, but no! THEY HAD TO KEEP THE MOVIE GOING!!!!!!! There is about another 15 minutes of the movie!!!!!!! One of the only things that i question about Ben Stillers carrer.
this rental is harmless for the kids...and really a made for TV feature (movie of the week). ben stiller played the EXACT role in Zoolander...so it's kinda neat to see an actor get paid for doing the same thing twice. all i can say is i didn't have to fast forward with kids due to language or scenes, but at some points, the movie could use some fast forwarding to move it along.
