A movie about a strip club where there's virtually no stripping. What a waste.
Lots of people like this director, but I didn't care for the movie. It was confusing and purposely kept viewers off-kilter. Lots of films do this (Memento, Donnie Darko), but this film did not deliver for me. Don't let that box art fool you. Was this review helpful? Yes

This movie was just awful!!!! How it got 3 1/2 stars is a complete mystery, just like the movie itself. There was absolutely nothing interesting about this movie. And the main character, who happens to work at a strip club, was the only person in the joint that never danced naked!! She had more clothes on than the men in the club!!!! This movie had no direction, no story line and didn't make any sense at all!!!! I thought maybe it would all come together in the end, but it never did. I was left wondering, WHAT????? I wasn't very impressed with the story line, nor did I care about the characters and what might happen to them. I will share that the brief nudity shots of young dancers were pleasant to see. The young ladies had the most appealing shapes of any female extras that I can recall. Mia Kirshner (Jenny in the 'L Word') was good. Also, gave her non-surprising lesbian kiss in this video. Was she bisexual? How did the mother and daughter die? Were these people real? Like I indicated; who cares? Was this review helpful? Yes

I have to disagree with other reviewer comments for this one, because I thought it was very carefully put together to good dramatic effect, with a backstory for the characters, and why they are there, that doesn't unfold until the end. For those who purchase this because they like strip clubs or skin flicks don't waste your time because this wasn't made for you. Does the incubator owned by the poacher of rare birds serve as a metaphor for the club itself, hatching birds that will eventually be set free? Does the "improper" touch by this same bird owner, now serving as a surrogate for the male protagonist, somehow free the dancer to escape her own cage and enter into a world that is more than just symbolic performance? If those questions don't intrigue you then you'll waste your time with this one. If they do, it may be well worth it. Was this review helpful? Yes

It took three tries to watch this movie, the first two times I fell asleep and thought that maybe that was the reason it didn't hold my interest. There were several revolving storylines in the film, none made sense throughout the movie, and none came together in the end. When a movie tries this hard to elude you, you expect that it will be come togther with an interesting twist. It didn't.
Also, I fail to see how the section "movies similar to exotica" follow along. I have seen all but one of the movies listed. Not only did all the other movies have a point and something to keep you interested, they were actually good movies, two of which I have seen again and again.
