What does a biographer do when the truth about his subject is far less pleasant than the legend? That is the moral dilemma at the heart of Cobb, which explores the lives of both baseball's premier hitter, Ty Cobb (Tommy Lee Jones), and the sportswriter assigned to set his story down, Al Stump (Robert Wuhl). Stump arrives at the Tahoe home of the dying Cobb to write the official life story of the first man inducted into the Baseball Hall Of Fame. He finds a drunken, misanthropic, bitter racist who abuses his biographer as well as everyone else. Stump must either candycoat his subject's life or present an accurate picture of a disgusting man who happened to become an American sports hero. The movie's biting focus on Cobb, ferociously performed by Jones, is not matched by its weaker representation of Stump, an imbalance which ultimately weakens the film's overall effect. ~ Don Kaye, Rovi

This movie was more about a writer's dilemma to tell the truth, or paint a glossy picture. A little more period information, film clips, etc. would have helped. This will not inform the 'younger' generations the greatness of ealry baseball.

If you have read the book this was based on and were hoping for something like it, beware. The intro to the movie is based on the book and the movie is based on the intro to the book. This isn't really a movie about Ty Cobb, it is a movie about writing a book about Ty Cobb.

One star is being generous. But who knows, maybe it got better after I turned it off halfway through. A real stinkeroo.

Great acting by Tommy. However, I expected more of Cobb's excellent batting career, He may have been an SOB, which is agreed to by biographies, but the many records he held deserved more exposure.

It was a movie about a specific person , Ty Cobb, if you have an interest in learning about him. It showed him in a very bad light, from the normal moral point of view. I did not like him at all as he was presented in the movie, but I'm not sure he was really that bad. The movie expressed a point of view about him. The acting was excellent. But for me, anyway, it was not the kind of movie I expected and would have preferred. It was about an old man working with an author on his biography. I wanted the usual approach which would show Cobb mainly as a boy and younger man on and off the ballfield, show him however he was, not an old man talking about his past. Thus, I did not find it a really enjoyable and entertaining movie. But it's a point of view to consider in evaluating the character of Ty Cobb.

Amazing movie Tommy Lee Jones is really really good in this. It really shows the raw side of this amazing baseball player. So worth renting.

This would have been a better movie without the bad language. Tommy Lee Jones acting was excellent as always. Seems there is always a dark side to every entertainer; whether they are actors, singers, or athletes. All are put on a pedestal and admired until they die. But when you see their biography, you realize they were just an average person, not anything special except for their talent.

If you like baseball you'll like this. And if you don't like baseball you'll still get to experience the unique charecter of Ty Cobb played by Tommy Lee Jones.

It's not a movie about sports. It's not a movie about Ty Cobb. It's a movie about greatness. And, the sacrifices it takes to be great. Very thought provoking.
