this version of the DVD is near impossible to watch. The sound (poorest audio quality) does not match the image, the subtitles are bad and full of mis-spellings and grammatical errors. If you don't understand cantonese, good luck with any hope of following what's going on. Look for another version of the DVD, cause this one (that I received) is no good!

Afroasianstyle

Wong's films are usually very very good the problem with this film is that this is an incredibly bad print. The colors are washed out. Where's Criterion when you need them? DO NOT RENT!

Poor narrative style. Poor editing and jump cuts make the movie very hard to watch. Too many extreme closeups, does not give you a chance to figure out who, why, where? No consistent organizer of sensibilities. Does not follow fundamental 3 act structure. Not to mention that in both Cantonese and Mandarin, the lip sync is off about 3 -5 seconds. Really, really hard to follow. Pros are that costumes, art direction and effects are good.

Man I slept through this movie and felt great!!! Not sure if the movie deserves half a star or five, but I will err on the safe side. This movie is a good way to put you to sleep. The senerity of the scenery, the dreary dialog, and a very confusing story make for a great snoozer. Whoever wrote the synopsis for this movie should be taken out and shot (just kidding!). And the same goes to the critiques who bestowed all the awards on this one.

The total run time is 1.5 hours. I fell asleep every 20 minutes. I kept watching hoping that it will get better - but it didn't. My recommendation is to skip it and select something else.
