5 out of 5 people found this review helpful this was a GREAT movie!! It was way ahead of its time and in some ways, very beautiful. The ending was extremely suspenseful however one has to keep in mind that it is an older film and may not live up to the kind of horror or suspense that some movie viewers expect nowadays. If you like Alfred H. and/or old episodes of "Twilight Zone", you'll definitely get a big kick out of this. (also -- it is a "Criterion Collection" dvd but didn't offer any kind of extras...that was a little surprising to me...)WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Though it now seems old-fashioned, it is full of Hitchco(kian suspense, and very well acted. In addition to the diabolical intrigue and excellent plot twists, we are offered a charming glimpse of French provincial life and how an old-fashioned boys' boarding school was run. If the beautiful French language (spoken with more than one accent) is pleasing to your ear, treat yourself to this original film version. It is head and shoulders better than the remake with Sharon Stone and Isabelle Adjani. (Quick note on the subtitles: They can never be perfect, and in this film, a play on words in French involving the word "arreter" [accent mark excluded], which means both "to arrest" and "to cease", loses its cleverness in translation.) The plot twists are the main ingredient but the setting, charactors and tone of the film are what make it great. To be sure it is a "puzzle" but when you reach the end all the pieces fit neatly together with the total effect being truly more than the sum of its parts. A real gem and well worth watching. I think the subtitles are part of the fun and did not detract from my enjoying this movie. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

It actually said the best film Hitchcock NEVER made. I don't like reading subtitles, but once I got started, I couldn't stop. The plot twists and turns and at the end, you still don't know the final ending. This is one mistake I'm glad I made. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

I don't want to read a movie! Why aren't these movies marked as foreign?!!!! No where does this thing say it's foreign and the title is even changed!! The title on the movie is Les Diaboliques! If you simply give the correct title then I know it's in French!!!!! And I'm tired of redneck liberals! If a movie has a gay agenda it gets a higher ranking! If it has a racist Black agenda it gets a higher ranking! And if it's foreign it gets a higher ranking! I'm used to that prejudice but the least you redneck liberals can do is give the actual titles and let the rest of us know when something isn't in English! Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL?
