The greatest film that Alfred Hitchcock never made, Henri-Georges Clouzot's Diabolique is set in a provincial boarding school run by headmaster Michel Delasalle (Paul Meurisse). A ruthless lothario, he becomes the target of a murder plot concocted by his long-suffering invalid wife Christina (Vera Clouzot, the director's own spouse) and his latest mistress, an icy teacher played by Simone Signoret. A dark, dank thriller with a much-imitated "shock" ending, Diabolique is a masterpiece of Grand Guignol suspense. The simple murder plot goes haywire, and Michel's corpse disappears, prompting strange rumors of his reappearance which grow more and more substantial as the film careens wildly towards its breathless conclusion. Later remade as a greatly inferior 1996 Hollywood feature with Sharon Stone and Isabelle Adjani. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi

This movie is one of the ones that set the standard on plot twists and suprise endings. This movie is so brilliant for its time. Dont watch the Sharon Stone version its no where near as good as this one. If you like Hitchcock films you should check this one out.

This is a great movie that has it all. The plot twists are the main ingredient but the setting, charactors and tone of the film are what make it great. To be sure it is a "puzzle" but when you reach the end all the pieces fit neatly together with the total effect being truly more than the sum of its parts. A real gem and well worth watching. I think the subtitles are part of the fun and did not detract from my enjoying this movie.

Great Alfred Hitchcock type movie. It relies on the plot and acting and not special effects. Very entertaining!

Well done mystery that has a plot twist that I wasn't anticipating. At first I wasn't seeing how it was going to be that interesting, but soon enough it pulled me in. Good movie.

I misread the description and thought I was getting a Hitchcock movie. It actually said the best film Hitchcock NEVER made. I don't like reading subtitles, but once I got started, I couldn't stop. The plot twists and turns and at the end, you still don't know the final ending. This is one mistake I'm glad I made.

Loved it. Did not realize subtitled, but still loved it. It was amusing and suspenseful at the same time. Very much enjoyed it and would recommend to someone who appreciates old foreign suspense movies.

If I wanted to read I'd read one of my 500 very good books! I don't care how good a foreign film is! I don't want to read a movie! Why aren't these movies marked as foreign?!!!! No where does this thing say it's foreign and the title is even changed!! The title on the movie is Les Diaboliques! If you simply give the correct title then I know it's in French!!!!! And I'm tired of redneck liberals! If a movie has a gay agenda it gets a higher ranking! If it has a racist Black agenda it gets a higher ranking! And if it's foreign it gets a higher ranking! I'm used to that prejudice but the least you redneck liberals can do is give the actual titles and let the rest of us know when something isn't in English!
