Based on the Broadway play by Robert Fryer and Lawrence Carr, Desk Set represents the eighth screen teaming of Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn. Hepburn plays the head of a TV network research department; Tracy plays an efficiency expert, hired to modernize Hepburn's operation. When Tracy has a huge computer installed, Hepburn and her co-workers (including Joan Blondell and Sue "Miss Landers" Randall) fear that they're going to lose their jobs. Their suspicions are confirmed when the computer merrily begins issuing pink termination slips. But something is obviously amiss: the computer not only fires the ladies, but also the head of the network--and Tracy, who isn't even on the company payroll! At this point, Tracy explains that the computer was designed to help Hepburn and her staff and not replace them; he also confesses that, given the pink-slip incident, this might not have been such a hot idea. But Hepburn, who has fallen in love with Tracy, is in just the right mood to forgive him--and doesn't need to consult her research files to come up with this decision. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy made about 8-9 movies together. You know, each of them are legend on their own. You really must watch all of their movies they made together. Again, Katharine and Spencer show good chemistry in this movie. It makes you smile.

Nothing like Hepburn and Tracy for an enjoyable movie.

Well, I'm a librarian, so I'm a bit biased, but I have always loved this movie. Granted, the actual way that librarians work is totally wrong in this. But the whole issue of computers replacing people is still relevant today. Katherine Hepburn is wonderful. Spencer Tracy is perfect and the plot moves along well. Love that Hepburn doesn't just cave to the idiot who strung her along for 7 years. A fine evening's entertainment.

Desk Set is a classic Tracy-Hepburn movie. You will find it entertaining and enjoyable. It is refreshing to spend one hundred plus minutes simply being intellectually entertained when so many of today’s films display a “grossness” that would never play in this movie. Don’t’ me wrong, there are many fine films today. It is just way too easy in 2009 to get into one that is a disappointment. If it is entertainment with a few chuckles you are looking for, Desk Set will suit you fine.

The beginning kept you wondering if you rented the right movie. But as the characters developed, so did the charm and the chemistry between Tracy and Hepburn. Good for some wonderful laughs and the strong women characters were appreciated.

Plays from this era made into movies just don't appeal to me. I thought this was stupid, even with a great cast.
