It is a classic and a head of its time for being filmed in 1965-67. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More I am not an "artsy" movie lover and pretentious movies make my skin crawl. However if you view this film through the eyes of a 1968 audience that had never seen anything even remotely as advanced as this film making, you will appreciate the quantum leap that occurred when this movie was made. This film is not for the person looking for the typical "brain-in-neutral" flick (so don't bother to rent or review it please!) but rather it reaches out to that person who sat in mesmerized wonder at those grainy pictures of Apollo 11's moon landing and dreamed of the biggest questions of mankind at that moment. I am one of those who still to this day asks the unanswerable questions about the universe and still finds great awe when viewing Kubrick's masterpiece. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? The first 2 acts are marvelous and engrossing, tense and beautiful, however, the third act thrusts us into a overly long acid trip and stomps on the breaks leaving us scratching our heads trying to come up with some kind of sense as to what just transpired. The movie is so well done that it does benefit from watching a second time, but after absorbing this movie my conclusion is that, while it has the makings of a masterpiece, it is absolutely way too long (with unexplicable blackness and an intermission...) and the ending is bizzare in an unstasfying and unresolving way leaving us puzzled instead of intrigued. Read More I cannot believe there is such a boring thing exists. Basically you will be watching two guys eating meals for 10 munites, few people walking for 20 minutes, and several pictures of space ships (of their imagination) moving for 30 minutes, a big red lens representing the computer for 20 minutes and that's it. All I can add to it is that all the above mentioned movements, including a few empty but long dialogues (between humen, human and computer), are so slow that a snail is 10x faster. Yeah, you know what people in 1968 thought 2001 would be like: displays are tiny small CRTs, control buttons are bigger than their fists... All in all, it is a shame for him and everybody. It is a crime to waste other people's time. Don't watch it unless a gun is pointed to your head. It is more interesting to watch paint dry, grass grow or, if weather won't coorperate, stay home and count how many grains in a sult shaker. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Now that one has been topped. Maybe when it first came out it broke ground, but the actual story is so weak that once technology surpassed this film, it is revealed as being a long boring "artsy" movie. Now I admit I was not on acid when I watched this, so maybe I missed something, but I feel this is another case of "The Emperor's New Clothes". Meaning, if you don't say you enjoyed it, you're just not cool. Kubrick says he left the ending open to interpretation because he didn't have a clue how to end it, so he just made up a bunch of crap and called it art. Even Clarke, who wrote the book, couldn't explain Kubrick's ending. Don't follow the sheep. Think for yourself. This movie sucks! Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Could somebody please tell me what this movie was about? Anybody who I ask who liked this movie cannot answer this question. I am told I just don't get it. Again, just explain it to me. It is one of those movies that "they" told you was good so everybody has to like it. Quit drinking the kool aid people. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No |
