I was forced to read a medley of literature by my English teacher this past junior year of my highschool career. Among them was Hemingway's novella The old man and the sea and I absolutley loved the written version. This 1990 take on the story is not nearly as good as the 1958 version starring Spencer Tracy and the only real reason I was curious to see it was because of the appearance made by Anthony Quinn of whom I am a fan of but I liked the novella itself the best and if anything I recomend you read that. Some things are better left to the imagination and not meant to be translated from the paper to the screen and The old man and the sea is a prime example of this.

What I love about this movie is that it portrays the way the poorer population in the Caribbean live even today. It is gritty, It is real, and it tells the tale of a man with great passion.

A remake of the 1958 film & Hemmingway tale. This one stars Anthony Quinn as the old man Santiago and he brings a truly touching performance, but the rest of this particular version does not quite hold up to the original. Still, if you are a fan of Anthony Quinn as I am I would recommend this.
