Alice in Wonderland (1983) Reviews

Alice in Wonderland (1983)
Member Rating:
This 1982 made-for-TV version of the Lewis Carroll classic Alice in Wonderland features an all-star cast. Such celebrities as Donald O'Connor, Maureen Stapleton and Eve Arden struggle to perform while buried under mounds of makeup and tons of eccentric costuming as Carroll's alternate-world loonies. Alice in Wonderland was first telecast Oct 3, 1983, on PBS' Great Performances. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

On the sleeve it says it's only 90 minues long and 1 part, but if you wait for the credits to end the second part will start. I remember being terrified of the Jabberwocky as a child, watching it was an adult it's almost commical. My girls both loved it, and we're planning on buying it now.

This was one of my favorite movies when I was little. I remember being scared of the Jabberwocky and fast forwarding through it so if you have small children who are watching it be aware of that. Otherwise it is a wonderful movie version of a classic story. Worth your time to rent.

I absolutely LOVED this movie when I was a kid. My mom had recorded it on VHS and I wore the tape out! Soooo many memories!

I remember this movie from when I was a child and it brings back some really good memories so I may be partial. However, it really is a good movie and is much better than the wacky one that just recently came out.

Yay! I remembered seeing this as a kid on tv and I was so happy to find it out on DVD. It was just as I remembered and surprisingly, my kids enjoyed it too.

Is it great? No. Today's children may find it boring, adults may find it kinda creepy (one little girl among costumed, dancing old men?), and the music is lackluster at best. But this is the Alice I remember from my childhood, not the Disney one. The Jabberwocky and Carol Channing both used to terrify me. This little Alice is one of the best, though, a talented little actress. And seeing famous people in costume is always amusing.

I suppose it is the difference between reading a story and using ones imagination to create the characters compared to someone else portraying them as they thought of them. I prefered my ideas of Alice in wonderland. I imagine for a child this would be a wonderful movie but I found that the story was somewhat disjointed and some sequences far to long. The subtleties if Carols writing and play on words only occasionally was evident. maybe Through the looking glass will be better as it contained much more wisdom and curious ideas than Alice in wonderland ever did. Nice for children.

Strange Movie. Lot of famous Stars. Poor Move. Don't bother with this. See Disney instead.
