Based on stories by Raymond Carver, Short Cuts follows 22 Los Angeles residents whose lives intersect over the course of a few days. Ann and Howard Finnegan (Andie MacDowell and Bruce Davison) are preparing for their son Casey's birthday party when the boy is injured in an auto accident and falls into a coma. Meanwhile, Andy (Lyle Lovett), a baker, seethes with anger over the birthday cake that wasn't claimed, and Howard's father, Paul (Jack Lemmon), decides that a visit with his ailing grandson is a good time to discuss his infidelities. Lois (Jennifer Jason Leigh) is a new mother who watches over her baby when not making money doing phone sex, which bothers her husband, Jerry (Chris Penn), though he knows they need the money. Pilot "Stormy" Weathers (Peter Gallagher) takes a very literal approach to dividing up community property with his ex-wife (Frances McDormand). Doreen (Lily Tomlin) is trying on to hold her marriage with Earl (Tom Waits), who is a good man on the rare occasions that he's sober. Zoe (Lori Singer), a classical musician, is trying to find some way to connect with her mother, Tess (Annie Ross), a jazz singer. Dr. Ralph Wyman (Matthew Modine) and his wife, Marian (Julianne Moore) put their bickering on hold while they have dinner with another couple, Stuart and Claire Kane (Fred Ward and Anne Archer). Stuart and his pals Gordon and Vern (Buck Henry and Huey Lewis) earlier went on a fishing trip where they discovered the body of a drowned woman but decided not to report it until the end of the weekend. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Like all Altman films this one rides along the envelope of the weird. Character-driven about basically ordinary people, but all of whom manage to find that pocket of weird. Whether artist or blue-collar, the characters bounce through life thrown from bumper to bumper. Finally they all tilt. Typical Altman. Long but rich film.

I really enjoyed this movie but for different reasons than usual. I found myself intrigued by all of the different lives yet somewhat disparaged by their behavior. Ultimately, the ending of the movie had an interesting message, what one would expect from a Robert Altman film. This movie is for those who like "thinking" films.

I happen to like dark movies. This movie is a study on human ugliness. If you don't like dark movies, you'll hate this. A bit long and takes some effort to keep all the characters straight.

This is a very highly overrated film like most other Altman movies (in my opinion). Although I did enjoy a few of the characters and the dialogs, there's nothing in this movie to hold your attention for the entire duration (3 hrs running time). Boring!

No point to this movie. Alot of big names doesn't mean a good movie.

I certainly liked this film, especially after a second viewing. But the weak spots kept me from seeing it as one of the very best Altman movies. There are some less than great performances in key roles, because the actors are miscast, or playing caricatures, or are just not that great. Some story lines seem facile, and the ending feels unsatisfyingly convenient and cute. Still, there is a lot that is funny, and a lot that i™s moving. But it never quite has the depth, or power or overall vision of its earlier multi-character epic cousin, Nashville. That said, most critics and people seemed to like it even more than me, so it's well worth seeing and deciding for yourself.

This is not a bad movie from Rober Altman. But vievers may get confused by following the actions of different families, and their actions. But overall it is OK movie.

3 long wasted hours spent on this movie. We rented it based on the 4 star rating; boy was that misleading. Most of the characters are twisted, and several scenes had absolutely no point at all.
