The Story of Qiu Ju  (1992)

The Chief should have known better than to tangle with a pregnant woman. Those hoping to see a svelte Gong Li in a provocative outfit will be disappointed as she waddles across the screen as a completely bundled up pregnasaurus. If you liked "Not One Less", you might like this movie as they share a similar theme of a Chinese country girl that refuses to give up. Thinking this might be a dry, boring story of one woman against the world, it was surprising to see an interesting tale of absurdity. This movie might be best categorized in the satire genre and contains a collection of characters and circumstances that redefine naivete, stubbornness and ineptitude. The acting, directing, cinematography and scenery were excellent. The audio defaults to stereo. There are no extras. Absolutely recommended.

Wow! What a great movie I absolutely loved it. The film kept you interested with the way it enveloped you into the characters lives. The whole thing of seeking justice for her husband and taking it to far is a lesson for all of us in that when you try to take things to far you might not like the outcome. Very good film I highly recommend it 5 stars all the way :-)

this movie was interesting in showing how Chinese people can interact on different levels, and how being stubborn can backfire on you at times. I kept wondering though, if this was a true depiction of Chinese society, which seems to be more humane and just than America.

zzzzz...ok, I just woke up from the film. If I had read this film as a short story, I'd have thought it was great. If I'd have seen all the other films I've been waiting to see, it would have been just fine. If I had seen every other Gong Li film except this one, I'd have been quite pleased. If I were stoned or something I might have found the absurdity more amusing. But mostly, I just watched an interesting character study and commentary of communist bureaucracy that was a little bit dull. It felt like I was reading.

I watched the whole movie, waiting for Qui Ju to really kick some butt. Man, is she stubborn! In America we would have capitolized on the whole thing. It was a memorable movie, if you are looking for action or drama go elswhere.
