Alfredo, Alfredo (1972) Reviews

Alfredo, Alfredo (1972)
Member Rating:
This mildly amusing satire of Italian marital customs concerns a meek bank teller (Dustin Hoffman) who has an affair with pretty Carla Gravina, then learns that he is unable to get a divorce from his tiresome wife (Stefania Sandrelli). Hoffman learned his lines in Italian before making Alfredo, Alfredo, only to discover that it was being filmed in English and redubbed. Although it has its moments, the film has aged badly, particularly with regard to its views of women, who are portrayed as either sex kittens or shrews. ~ Robert Firsching, Rovi

What were the producers of this DVD thinking of ? On this DVD, there are no subtitles on the Italian version -- unlike the theatrical version I've seen twice. And the English dubbed version has someone other than Dustin Hoffman dubbing his character. So if you want to appreciate Hoffman's mimed performance (it's very good) you need to know Italian. The English dubbed version is better than usual but still a little cheesy. My rating for the Italian language English subtitled version is 4.
