Read More Overshadowed by Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, and GoodFellas, this actually one of Scorsese's best films, his last masterpiece before the flawed works that have been come in its wake. I'm surprised anyone can call this boring, I can only guess the emotional repression may be the reason (one of the main themes of this story revolves around the snobbish, suffocating environment of 1870's high society), but even that is broken through by Daniel Day-Lewis's performance and the sharp, satirical narration. Not since The Magnificent Ambersons has a period piece been done with such élan. Scorsese is known as a technical virtuoso, and his style works brilliantly and seamlessly here without ever seeming dated or intruding. Again, an underrated gem in Scorsese's body of work. I saw this in the theater when it was originally released. The performances are first-rate across the board, but Winona Ryder and Daniel Day-Lewis stand out. A heartbreakingly beautiful and understated film about how the choices we make define us. Scorsese's direction is outstanding as usual, but was surprising to some at the time. The violence here is emotional and social, not physical, but still painful and hard to watch. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More I found this film to be very interesting as well as a very close adaptation of the novel by Wharton. Had I not read the book or understood this era of literature I probably would not have enjoyed it as much. A little slow moving but very good( it speeds up after the first 30 minutes). Read More First of all I would like to say that I love this period and films about it. Daniel Day-Lewis, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Winona Rider gave superb performances and the scenery and costumes were absolutely beautiful. I liked the plot but found it to be extremely long and relatively boring. I wasn't sure I was going to make it through the entire movie and stay awake. Had it not been for the performances I think I would have woken up in time to see the credits. Again, the main story was good but it was something that could have been told just as effectively in half the time. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Michelle Pfeiffer is perfect casting for the Countess Olenska. Martin Scorsese is a brilliant director. Rent it and you'll love it. Also, 'The House of Mirth' is another adaption from the Edith Wharton collection and too is great. Check it out! Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No
