An Affair to Remember, director Leo McCarey's scene-for-scene remake of his own 1939 film Love Affair, isn't really an improvement on the original, but it's equally as enjoyable. Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr, high-profile types both engaged to be married to other people, meet and fall in love during an ocean voyage. To test the depth of their commitment to each other, Grant and Kerr promise that, if they're still in love at the end of six months, they will meet again at the top of the Empire State Building. Clips from An Affair to Remember were used as "reference points" throughout the 1993 romantic comedy Sleepless in Seattle, which likewise concluded atop the Empire State Building. Disproving the theory that "Third Time's the Charm," Warren Beatty attempted to remake Affair to Remember, again titled Love Affair, in 1994. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

I'm not a fan of oldies. But this one is different. Acting is quite good overall. The lines (jokes especially) aren't as dated as most movies in the same genre. However, the aspect of character development is virtually unmatched. It's a "must see" for anyone looking for a great love story.

For once a movie lives up to the hype. Cary Grant is my absolute favorite! I think this is one of his best! The acting was good and the comedy was spot on! The chemistry undeniable. If you miss this one, you are missing a true classic.

Although totally staged and extremely contrived, Grant and Kerr nevertheless managed to make this film watchable and even deceivingly moving.

Here's one case where an almost shot-for-shot remake measures up to the original. Leo McCarey cast Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr in roles played by Charles Boyer and Irene Dunne in his original "Love Affair" and came up with perhaps his best-remember film. Grant's easy-going charm and Kerr's vivaciousness keep the film light on its feet. The ending, of course, is a classic. The Blu-Ray edition is especially good for a Cinemascope film of the period, and excellent shorts on McCarey and the film are included.

I am sure this was a great movie when I saw it a couple of years ago. I do not know why I keep getting a request to write a review. It was returned a long time ago.

I liked the story and it had some funny parts as well. The locations were beautiful. It didn't seem realistic that a guy as good looking as Clark Gable would even be interested in someone like Deborah Kerr. I didn't like her at all in this movie, she just seemed too plain for him. I think a better choice for a woman from this era would have been Maureen O'Hara, she is more striking and captivating.
