I know this film was made in 1931, but the acting was brutal. Do yourself a favor and don't make the same mistake I did, rent the Cimarron version with Glenn Ford as Yancy Cravat it's 10x's better. WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes

We've come a long way since this was done. Kind of interesting if for no other reason than a page out of film history. WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes

Richard Dix' acting, or overacting, is more suitable to the Silent Era. The film, however, is enjoyable and worth watching. WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes

Too bad we don't explore for oil today like they did back then. But of course we have politicians today that don't give a damn about working Americans! Close this ReviewWAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes

See this if: 1-you want to study the history & cinnamatography of the first motion pictures, 2-you liked Edna Ferber's 'Giant' made in '56 (a better treatment of her epic novels), 3- you have challenged yourself to see all the Academy Award winers, 4-you like the good old Talkies acting - (I thought Richard Dix was imitating Clark Gable in GWTWind, but that was made in '39). Dix sometimes has a southern accent, sometimes not. Still it is an EPIC film covering nearly 50 years of change in a 'western' town with a strong story of a woman, left by her wandering husband, who takes over the business and emerges as a politician. What happened to Dix when he disappeared was a little puzzling. So, the acting and costumes are spotty, but the scenery, story line and characatures are fun. Close this ReviewWAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Broad scope plot. Once you get past the period stereotypes you find the movie actually shows the falicy of them all. Very well written. WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes
