It brings up a subject with teachers that we are still dealing with today-done in a very tasteful way ,it just brings to my mind how little we have processed with the issue of being gay! This movie is 46 years old and it is worth watching. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No | ||

Read More Great to see Hepburn and especially Shirley Maclaine in a dramatic role. Although I'm sure Hepburn had top billing here, I found Maclaine's performance the most exceptional in this well-acted drama. Very unusual to see Maclaine during this era, playing such a complex and serious character. This was made during her peak as a Hollywood starlet and while she shines in her other comedic movies, her acting range really shows here. The children in the film give great performances, which is crucial to the plot of the film. Tough subject matter to deal with here but dealt well, especially for the period (the 60's). Recommended. You have to put yourself back into 1961 to imagine what the big deal is. But it's over the top to think that a rotten little brat can tell a lie that so destroys lives and that doesn't get exposed even in court. Ultimately, I had to knock off a couple of stars. Read More I caught this movie on AMC and with no expectations, I decided to watch it. But I soon found myself engrossed with the story and how it was being so "tastefully" dramatized. Audrey Hepburn and Shirley MacLaine were inspiring together and gave very dramatic performances. And the villain of the movie was wicked and dangerous little girl. Intense and engaging. The acting was wonderful and it had a good story. However, why did Lillian Hellman ruin her own piece by having such a negative, unrealistic ending?
The trio of Martha, Karen and Joe had stuck together through thick and thin only to insist on going their own ways in the end. It didn't make sense. It was totally illogical since they had no friends and nothing going for themselves other than their friendship.
The suicide seemed phony. It seemed like they had to get rid of Martha so that Karen and Joe could get on with it. A cheap way to end the dilemma.
The movie had too many outbursts, making it seemed melodramatic. Shirley Maclaine gave a great performance. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No |
