The Children's Hour (1961)
Member Rating:
Based on the 1934 play by Lillian Hellman, The Children's Hour is set at an exclusive girl's school managed by best friends Audrey Hepburn and Shirley MacLaine. When student Karen Balkin is punished for one of her many misdeeds, the mean-spirited youngster rushes to her wealthy aunt Fay Bainter, and, randomly choosing a phrase she has undoubtedly read in some magazine, accuses Hepburn and MacLaine of having an "unnatural relationship." As Balkin's lies grow in viciousness, the student's parents withdraw their children from the school. Hepburn and MacLaine sue Bainter for libel, only to lose their case when MacLaine's aunt Miriam Hopkins refuses to testify as a character witness. The trial takes its toll on the relationship between Hepburn and her boyfriend James Garner. When Bainter discovers that her niece has been lying, she tries to make amends, but it is too late. Director William Wyler had also helmed the first film version of Children's Hour, 1936's These Three, which due to censorship restrictions of the time did without the lesbian angle (the little girl's accusations involved a supposed romantic triangle between the two ladies and a male friend). Miriam Hopkins, who plays a supporting role in The Children's Hour, originally essayed the Shirley MacLaine role in These Three. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Great to see Hepburn and especially Shirley Maclaine in a dramatic role. Although I'm sure Hepburn had top billing here, I found Maclaine's performance the most exceptional in this well-acted drama. Very unusual to see Maclaine during this era, playing such a complex and serious character. This was made during her peak as a Hollywood starlet and while she shines in her other comedic movies, her acting range really shows here. The children in the film give great performances, which is crucial to the plot of the film. Tough subject matter to deal with here but dealt well, especially for the period (the 60's). Recommended.

This is a movie with an excellent cast and acting. It brings up a subject with teachers that we are still dealing with today-done in a very tasteful way ,it just brings to my mind how little we have processed with the issue of being gay! This movie is 46 years old and it is worth watching.

This movie was groundbreaking for the times. Hepburn and MacLaine did a fantastic job. This movie just makes you want to cry. It just goes to show you that love is love no matter who you are and or who you love. This all star cast does a great job. I suggest you watch it if you want to see how great actors perform.

Great cast for a risked job by mr Wyler. Audres is as lovely as usual. MacLaine does a great job for the most hard role in the movie. Even the supporting actors are great.

This movie gives real insight into American views and taboos in 1961. The tragedy of the story is not only how quick the town is to condemn the two women, but how the women themselves don't have a way to understand or even identify, much less appreciate, their relationship. MacLaine's performance is one of the very best of her career and Hepburn shows her range. Fay Bainter is extraordinary. In its back and forth movement from bright to foreboding, the musical score perfectly reflects the torn feelings of the main characters.

This movie impacted me immensely the first time I saw it after I finished my freshman finals. I bawled like a baby in a pretty empy theater that afternoon. I just saw it for the 4th time, and the theme holds up well. The shame of being gay is not as strong or dangerous as 50 years ago, but the destruction of lies and prejudice remain the same. I find it a very compelling story with a great cast and excellent direction. I highy recommend this film for those who love character-driven situtations.

I have a lot to say about this movie. I thought that three-quarters of it was good and other quarter not good. The acting was wonderful and it had a good story. However, why did Lillian Hellman ruin her own piece by having such a negative, unrealistic ending? The trio of Martha, Karen and Joe had stuck together through thick and thin only to insist on going their own ways in the end. It didn't make sense. It was totally illogical since they had no friends and nothing going for themselves other than their friendship. The suicide seemed phony. It seemed like they had to get rid of Martha so that Karen and Joe could get on with it. A cheap way to end the dilemma. The movie had too many outbursts, making it seemed melodramatic. Shirley Maclaine gave a great performance.
