Directors David Greene and John-Michael Tebelak collaborate with composer Stephen Schwartz to bring his wildly successful Broadway musical, Godspell, to the big screen. Told almost entirely in song, Godspell presents the gospel of St. Matthew updated to New York City of the late '60s/early '70s, featuring Jesus Christ as a wandering minstrel dressed like a circus clown. By blowing on an instrument that reaches only the ears of a select few around the bustling city, John the Baptist (David Haskell) summons nine simpatico hippies to a fountain in Central Park, where they revel in the waters of their baptism. When Christ (Victor Garber) joins the group, the free-flowing fraternal love solidifies into a desire to spread the word of God around the city. Outfitting themselves in a nearby junkyard that bursts with color, the lively group makes its way around a sparsely populated fairy-tale version of the city, re-enacting Biblical parables with great enthusiasm and flamboyance. Opting for a lighter yet more devout approach than its thematically similar Jesus Christ Superstar, Godspell features an equivalent number of hummable hit songs, notably "Prepare Ye (The Way of the Lord)," "By My Side," and "Day by Day." ~ Derek Armstrong, All Movie Guide

Although somewhat corny, this adaptation of the hit off-Broadway show is faithful to the Gospel of Matthew. The pop music is still likable. I saw it when it first came out and forgot how good it was!

Considered one of the great Gospel musicals of the 60's/70's. A DVD to own! Many catchy tunes. Including the lift you from your down mood "It's All for the Best", which ends on top of the yet to be completed World Trade Center!!! A DVD to own!

I first saw this movie was I was 12 years old in 1972 and I loved it then and still love it. I watched it with my 8 and 12 year old sons and they also enjoyed it. I am going to buy this movie for my collection.

Never really bonded with this movie or characters as I did with Jesus Christ Superstar. Most of the songs are unmemoriable with the exception of Day by Day. I could appreciate the performances of the actors but not the disjointed story line. Pass on this movie unless you did drugs in the 60s and continue to do this while watching this outdated movie.

My spouse and I marched down the aisle to All Good Gifts. The song is still one of the most touching I've ever heard. It's also a bit sad to think that world has lost Lynne Thigpen. My kids still remember her as the "Chief" in the Carmen Sandiego TV series.

Godspell, the movie, is not as good as the theatrical production, but that's okay - with the exception of Hair, this is usually the case. SuperStar is one of my favorite musicals - this doesn't rival to it in terms of its music or dancing, but it's still a likeable and fairly followable telling of the gospel. My kids didn't have nearly as hard a time following the story here as they did with SuperStar. I liked their adaptation of the parables and their telling of them. My only point of confusion was John the Baptist and Judas Iscarot being played by the same actor. Best moment - Robin Lamont's "Day by Day" - she can really sing.
