Partly based on Charlie Chaplin's My Autobiography, this humorous and dramatic biopic features an all-star cast including Oscar nominee Robert Downey Jr., Dan Aykroyd, Anthony Hopkins, Kevin Kline, Diane Lane, and Chaplin's real-life daughter, Geraldine Chaplin, who portrays his mentally ill mother. With the use of flashback, an elderly Chaplin discusses his autobiography with his editor (Hopkins), who urges him to be more vulnerable and emotionally honest with his memoirs while journeying through his poverty-stricken childhood, closest friendships, many marriages, merciless pursuit by J. Edgar Hoover (Kevin Dunn), and ingenious invention of "The Little Tramp." Highlighted works such as The Gold Rush (1925) and The Great Dictator (1940) illustrate significant turning points in Chaplin's prolific filmography. Director Richard Attenborough's film also explores the circumstances surrounding Chaplin's exile from America and his eventual return to receive an honorary Academy Award. ~ Lisa Kropiewnicki, Rovi

Robert Downey does a nice job in this movie overall, although he does seem to talk so softly and often mumbles his sentences that it really makes it hard to understand what he is saying. It's sort of interesting how this movie takes the viewer from Chaplin's early childhood in the late 1800's, all the way through his acting career, to his ultimate death in 1977. The movie certainly shows glimpses of Chaplin in history: WW l; the Great Depression; WW ll; the McCarthy era of the 1950's; the Academy Awards in 1972. For what it was, it was a pretty good movie overall. It was nice to see Geraldine Chaplin (Charlie's real life daughter) playing the part of Charlie's mentally-ill mother during his earlier years. Kevin Kline, Diane Lane and Dan Aykroyd all do decent jobs as supporting actors in this movie, too.

Robert Downey Jr is spectacular in the role of Charlie Chaplin - the entire production is beautifully done and brings Chaplin to life in the best way - a must see

Was excellent. We all know about Chaplins penchant for young woman and I'm so glad this film didn't go deeply into that area, Was much broader strokes. Every aspect was very well done. The politics, Hoover (a serious mental job though nobody knew it then,) Communism, as real then as it is today but today it's called Socialism and folks it's NT a good thing, but I digress. Downey is to be praised, as all the actors are, writing, directing, sets, costumes. Bravo.

Very enjoyable biopic of this great comic actor and director. Downey's performance is excellent. I don't know if it's factually accurate but trust that the director, Richard Attenborough, would see that it was. Highly recommend for its period and subject matter.

One of Robert Downey Jr's greatest work in film to date. He is and amazing talent in this film. He captures every moment that you swear it's Chaplin. He brings Chaplin to life once again and shows us why Chaplin was the king (and still is) of comedy. It made me laugh and cry. This is a must see for all Downey and Chaplin fans. Hope you love it as much as I did.

Excellent cast, Robert Downey Jr's performance was outstanding. Read some of the other reviews and don't know enough to comment on the historical accuracy of the movie but I thought it was well done.

What an interesting story! Although Chaplin's life had its sad times, I'm so glad to know about the man and entertainer! Have since begun to watch the actual old flicks. Pretty cool stuff.

I love the fact that the C.C. story involves issues that we are being imploded w/today; Americans thinking that Communist is good; We won't be fooled again....are are we? sad.....when will America wake up to this horrible fact; The best line I love from this movie is when Charlie Chaplin says to a Communist supporter at a dinner party...when he was called a Jew (his not a jew by the way) but Charlies response was, I would be honored to be a Jew, even though I am not..." then he walked away. He tried to educate the Americans of the truths of the Communist move, being he was from a supressed country himself & knew for a fact that Communist is not a good thing; specially for the freedoms we have in America; so He took his knowledge to the film & certain people did not appreciate his wanting to inform the American people. Today, he would of be considered a Teabagger & would of been proud of it!
