Read More Chaplin did more for film then any other actor during his time, and it showed. Although my biggest gripe about this film would be the director, the actors themselves took me away from my seat and into the life of Charlie Chaplin. The all star cast pushed this movie to excellence. This film could have been one of the best autobiographical pieces ever made, had it not been for the director. I went into this film expecting a darker ending...a darker story...and a darker character. We all knew how funny he was, but how dark was his humor...when I went back and looked at some of his old silent films (before the "talkies") I was amazed by how many of them portray his life...the darker aspects of his life. Most of these points were just passing glance...which irritated me. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More Robert Downey does a nice job in this movie overall, although he does seem to talk so softly and often mumbles his sentences that it really makes it hard to understand what he is saying. It's sort of interesting how this movie takes the viewer from Chaplin's early childhood in the late 1800's, all the way through his acting career, to his ultimate death in 1977. The movie certainly shows glimpses of Chaplin in history: WW l; the Great Depression; WW ll; the McCarthy era of the 1950's; the Academy Awards in 1972. For what it was, it was a pretty good movie overall. It was nice to see Geraldine Chaplin (Charlie's real life daughter) playing the part of Charlie's mentally-ill mother during his earlier years. Kevin Kline, Diane Lane and Dan Aykroyd all do decent jobs as supporting actors in this movie, too. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More This movie turned out to be very good and actually quite heartbreaking when you think about the viscousness, hypocrisy, and just plain obtuse thinking that led to Chaplin's exile from America. However, it was very slow going. The movie seemed to drag though. The acting was superb, and I enjoyed hearing Anthony Hopkins' voice throughout the movie as he and Downy did a bit of narration.
Worth your while to see. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

All the others are absoluely great in their portrails. Chaplin really has not been widely renowned, but he should be. Genius, impetuous and eccentric. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL?
