The Cristero War serves as the backdrop of this historical drama following a group of devoted Mexican patriots who risk their lives to defeat an oppressive regime, and defend the freedom of future generations. Andy Garcia, Oscar Isaac, Eva Longoria, and Peter O'Toole star. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi
Very good movie!!! It makes me think about the United States and how Christianity is coming under attack here.....forcing crosses that have been up for years being removed, having The 10 Commandments being removed from public places, etc., etc....One leader caused all that to happen. We need to make sure that doesn't happen here!
Excellent movie with great acting. Fighting for freedom against an over reaching tyrannical government. History repeats itself over and over. The BD had excellent video and audio quality. The director is one of the very few that understands proper lighting, and this movie had the best I have seen in many years. It really showcases how a HD film should look. The audio was clear and clean with a great surround mix. The only drawback for me was that they used some of that handheld "shaky cam" effect which I really hate.
I watched the full movie here ----------> http://tiny.cc/movie784 (that link is for those who haven't watched it yet) Anyway, what can I say? this movie definitely made me love the characters and I can relate!! Just some minor plots that are ridicuous I didnt like.. anyway, 5/5 stars for this movie!!
I am Catholic - and never heard of the Cristero War. - and went to Catholic schools my entire life. So, I found this to be a very interesting film - with a great cast. And you don't have to be Catholic to enjoy it - (but I guess it might help.) I found it unbelievable that I never heard of this conflict before this film.
If you claim to be Roman Catholic then see this film. In the USA we are never told what happened to our Catholic brothers and sisters in 1926 in Mexico. This film is historical. Yes, people get killed. But the violence is not gratutious. You will appreciate your faith and your circumstances alot more after seeing this film. Even the American Knights Of Columbus tried to desperately help the Cristeros in Mexico (shown in a short film that comes with the DVD, very briefly mentioned in the movie). Andy Garcia gives a 5 star performance. Peter O'Toole does not disappoints. Mr. O'Toole gives a fine acting performance - one of his very last after retiring from the stage. Very moving. Yes, some people will cry. Others will not. Excellent film. Glad it was made.

The Cristero War started when a new regime began to persecute priests and the Catholic Church in Mexico in the 1920's. It began in small pockets of resistance but soon engulfed the whole of the country. Andy Garcia plays their general who fights because he believes in religious freedom. Many who fought , including this general, later become official martyrs of the church. There is "necessary" brutality . The beliefs of the church are forefront. The thing that is most important here is that most folks in the USA have never heard of this war and do not know that it even happened. This movie is well made. Ladies grab the box of facial tissues for all the tears you will shed. This movie is not for the faint-heart...but believe me you will always remember it.
