This dynamic and commanding adaptation of Tennessee Williams' Pulitzer Prize-winning play focuses on a troubled Southern family and the discord over their dying father's millions. Wealthy plantation owner Big Daddy Pollitt (Burl Ives), celebrating his 65th birthday, is visited by his sons, Brick (Paul Newman) and Gooper (Jack Carson). He has cancer, but a doctor has deliberately and falsely declared it in remission. Seemingly perfect son Gooper and his wife, Mae (Madeleine Sherwood), have several children and are anxiously expecting to inherit Daddy's millions. By contrast, Big Daddy's "favorite," Brick, is a has-been football star who's taken to drinking his days away since the suicide of his "best friend" a year earlier. He resents his wife, Maggie (Elizabeth Taylor), because he believes that she had an affair with his deceased friend. As a result, he refuses to sleep with her, although she remains devoted to him. Since Brick and Maggie have failed to produce any grandchildren, Big Daddy is inclined to leave his estate to Gooper, but Maggie attempts to prevent that by telling him that she is pregnant. Big Daddy knows better, yet he recognizes that Maggie loves Brick so much that she would be willing to do anything for him. Although Brick is self-destructive and resentful, unable to come to terms with his losses, it takes Big Daddy's recognition of his own mortality to make Brick change his perspective. Brick's struggle with his sexual identity, and the nature of his relationship with his "friend," had to be toned down for mass consumption, although this intelligently written and acted film covers such topics as infertility, adultery, and alcoholism that were still considered taboo in the 1950s. Newman brings depth and feeling to the role as Brick, while Taylor succeeds brilliantly in portraying Maggie as a passionate and understanding woman despite her own real-life emotional turmoil over the death of her husband at the time, producer Mike Todd. ~ Don Kaye, Rovi

If you love live theater, this is the next best thing. The movie puts Tennessee Williams' play on the screen. The entwined subplots and the dialog is all Williams... the acting is 100 percent Newman, Taylor, and Ives (who shows he is much more than a singer of childhood ditties). Today's aspiring actors should watch this just to study those old pros.

What a one of a kind story! The movie starts barely simmering, by the end it's nearly boiling over. Wondrously crafted and pitched perfectly. Only error that stuck out was the sometimes bad line delivery. Touches spots I haven't seen in films. I can't believe no one told me about it!

Every Character in this movie has huge flaws and every actor brings out the best in the character flaws, the players are so rich and over the top. The lines are impeccable, the actors don't need to rely on subtle nuance and glances here, Williams lets the tension hang out in hs writing! This is an all time classic. I love Big Daddy and Liz Taylor is Hot! literally. Try to count the drinks that Brick puts down - I dare you.

It doesn't matter how many times I've seen this, I enjoy it every time. This particular Tennessee Williams play does lend itself much better to the stage and I've seen it performed several times; however Elizabeth Taylor and Paul Newman were their most young and beautiful selves here and that alone is fun to watch. This was Newman's third film. He plays a 30 yr old though he wasn't quite 30 yet himself (and doesn't look it). Liz's husband who was the famous director Mike Todd was killed during the shooting of this in a plane crash and she came back to finish the film after just a short time despite her grief. The chemistry between Taylor and Newman holds us through this film despite the fact that you never leave the house. Big Daddy played by Burl Ives was simply brilliant. The father/son scenes between him and Newman are remarkable. For a film a half century old this year, it holds up well.

I know thIs is a classic. It's jusT that I don't like thiS style of movie. The whole thing is indoors. Nothing really happens other than everyone bickering and argUing with eaCh other. Some of the characters were overdone/overacted and were incredibly abrasive and annoying. This is not my idea of entertainment. I'm looKing for morE. Many of the old movies are this way -- dramas Depicting the relationships between the characters. But if you want to witness a two hour long vicious family fight then this is your movie.

The movie is a classic so I saw it and enjoyed it for what it was-an old movie. Newman and Taylor were awesome but even their acting couldn't keep my attention all the way through; some of it dragged a little too long.

I really wanted to like this movie so much. I mean you've got the two most beautiful stars ever as a couple, cant really go wrong can you. Well, too bad that all this film was a hour and a half pity party. what a bummer. Of course the acting was supurb, and the last half hour really heats up. it wasnt all bad. But its not one of those you could watch over and over. I would recommend watching it just to say you've seen it.
