Juan of the Dead (2011)
Member Rating:
Two friends from Cuba hatch a plan to launch a zombie extermination service after their picturesque island is overrun by the living dead in this satirical horror film from director Alejandro Brugués (Personal Belongings). It's the anniversary of the Cuban Revolution, and as the hungry undead make an unwelcomed appearance, best friends Juan (Alexis Días de Villegas) and Lázardo (Jorge Molina) decide to parlay their skills for dispatching zombies into a professional career. As the government attempts to maintain public order by blaming the fracas on Americans who they claim are attempting to topple the current regime, Juan and Lazardo rally the troops, gather their weapons, and prepare to make a killing by ridding Cuba of zombies one shambling, flesh-eating corpse at a time. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

This was a lot of fun and way better than I expected. The subtitles are distracting and sometimes are hard to keep up with but the story is great and it all works out. For the true zombie junky there is one scene (the second raft scene) alone that makes this worth watching, everything else is just icing on the cake.

Very funny movie if you can stand subtitles. It is simulat to Shaun of the dead but it is ground up from a different culture. It's a movie shot in cuba. So its more of that culture and there is language differences. But hey, who said zombies are going to attack an english speaking nation first? I thought it was funny and worth my time.

I liked the movie but i didn't enjoy reading the subtitles I was disappointed in this part of the movie because you can't change the audio setup to English. I still like Shaun Of The Dead more....

If this is a rip off of Shaun of the dead, it's a very poor one. The acting, special effects and make up was one of the worst. In Shaun of the dead there were tense moments, nothing remotely close to that here, with a roof top dance scene between a gay zombie and a human, which was not funny or scary, was one of the worst parts. Reading these reviews, I took a chance and I am not seeing any thing good that they saw. Just a cheesy cheap production.

Stupidly funny! I loved it, and I seldom write reviews! There's lots of cheaply done zombie movies that aren't worth wasting your time on, but this one was smart and funny. Like Shaun of the Dead, a nice blend of humor, zombies and just your average guys trying to get by. The Cuban propaganda disparaging the US was hilarious. The cast of normal people, not Hollywood hunk was refreshing. It was just a fun movie to watch! I hope to see more from this director.

Awesome movie, very nice to see something come out of Cuba like this! I'm guessing if you're latino you'd appreciate this more

Started out pretty vulgar (gross and unnecessary) but got much better after the vampires come into the picture. Worth the rent however, if you enjoy stupid but still funny and smart movies. Perhaps a bit of a rip off of "Shaun" but good for some hearty laughes.I especially liked the puns about American Imperialists. Mostly funny...

This movie was an absolute joy to watch. For the very first horror movie out of Cuba, or any movie out of Cuba, this was put together extremely well considering the budget restraints. The cast is easy to get used to and all are cast well in their roles. This movie is funnier than Shaun of the Dead and has a lot of fun with itself, making comments on Cuba and America that are spot on. I highly recommend this film for anyone who wants to have a very fun viewing experience. This is a 5 star movie for sure.

Yes, it's kind of a rip-off of "Shaun of the Dead", but aside from the "loveable losers battle zombies" theme, it's got a plot all it's own, and really gives some interesting solcial commentary about life in Cuba. It's also hilarious, so I recomend checking it out!
