Member Rating:
Belle de Jour dramatizes the collision between depravity and elegance, one of the favorite themes of director Luis Buñuel. Catherine Deneuve stars as a wealthy but bored newlywed, eager to taste life to the fullest. She seemingly gets her wish early in the film when she is kidnapped, tied to a tree, and gang-raped. It turns out that this is only a daydream, but her subsequent visits to a neighboring brothel, where she offers her services, certainly seem to be real. This illusion/reality dichotomy extends to the final scenes, in which we are offered two possible endings. Thanks to a question of copyright and ownership, Belle de Jour disappeared from view shortly after its 1967 release, not even resurfacing on videotape. When it was reissued theatrically in 1994, many critics placed the perplexing but mesmerizing film on their lists of that year's best films. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

I have always liked Deneuve but this film was just plain boring.

I wish, I wish--that this movie had been ban in the 60's and destroyed. It is a total waste of time.

Obviously none of the reviewers saw this film back in 1967 when it was released. In those days it was downright pornographic. Have seen it now in 2008, 41 years later, one wonders what all the fuss was about. If nothing else, Catherine Deneuve is one good looking lady.

Really wanted to like this film much more than I did. If you are a Deneuve fan, I suppose it is a must see. I don't appreciate dream/fantasy sequences when you are never quite sure what is the reality of the film. Tiring...

The disc I received had an error and I was unable to view anything from chapters 13-17, so I missed a good part in the middle of the film. I cant say too much, but from what I saw the level of violence, and nudity was much less than I was expecting. However, as Martin C stated, I'm sure for its time it pushed the envelope. Good character development, and yes, yes, a thousand times yes Catherine Deneuve is absolutely drop-dead gorgeous(and I dont even really like blondes)

Ridiculously bad, implausible and boring. Not even Chanel or Deneuve saved this picture UGH! If I need someone to play a person in a coma---I'm signing up Deneuve!

I kept waiting for this movie to be 'good', considering who stars in it.... but that ended up to be a complete waste of time. It was a total DUD. Unbelievably dumb, besides being tasteless, and void of any possible entertainment value.

Even the rapes were boring. This movie should be rated "0"
