Martin Scorsese's remake of Cape Fear provided the director with a box-office success to follow up the critical success of the previous year's Goodfellas. After serving a lengthy prison sentence for a sexual assault, Max Cady (Robert De Niro) comes calling on the man who served as his public defender, Sam Bowden (Nick Nolte). Max begins a campaign of harassment against the man and his family because Bowden buried a report that would have in all likelihood acquitted Cady of the charges against him. Bowden's shaky ethics continue in his personal life as he is considering beginning an extramarital affair with colleague Lori Davis (Illeana Douglas), since he and his wife, Leigh (Jessica Lange) have had a difficult time coming back together since he has admitted to previous indiscretions. Cady infiltrates the family most insidiously by cultivating a relationship with the Bowden's troubled teenage daughte, Danielle (Juliette Lewis), who is all the more susceptible to Cady's advances because of her parents' problems. Robert Mitchum and Gregory Peck, the stars of the original film, have cameo appearances in this version of Cape Fear. De Niro and Lewis were both nominated for Academy Awards for their work in the film. ~ Perry Seibert, Rovi

This remake of the original has a number of differences, including the introduction of conflicts within the Bowden family. Robert de Niro was the best choice possible for the role of Max Cady, giving a truly chilling performance. This is probably one of my favorite de Niro performances.

This was a great movie! I can't believe I am watching for the first time almost 20 years after it's realease. When my husband found out I had never seen it, he could not get it fgast enough. Although I found Jessica Lang very akward in this film, I still really enjoyed it.

another in my series of "why remake a classic" reviews. You have Robert Mitchum and Gregory Peck so why not try it with Nick Nolte? and DeNiro? Is Jessica Lange believable in anything? A sad remake of a great movie. Really, you're NEVER gonna get anyone slimier than Mitchum..."counselor...that daughter o yours is lookin..."

This is an alright movie from one of my top 3 favorite directors of all time. DeNiro was amazing in it and also pretty scary but it was just not my kind of horror movie. Stick to gangsta movies Scorsese. -C.L.

This movie is so dated that I thought it was from the early eighties. It turns out if from the early nineties. It was a ridiculous waste of time. I generally like all four of the leads but in this film they were all bad. The story was initially interesting but became laughable as DeNiro turned into the Terminator. And what was with the music? Duhn duhn DUUUUHHHNNN! Yeah, subtle. I preferred the Simpsons episode with Sideshow Bob.

Blood: 1 Cheese Factor: 5 Acting: 2 1/2 Overall: 2 This movie did not impress me in any way shape or form. It was like blah blah blah boring boring boring Juliette Lewis annoying me boring boring boring. It was so long winded and just dragged on and on. And what the f*ck was with Robert De Niro in this film everything from his stupid f*cking accent to the fact that he continued to come back more times than Jason Voorhes in the 'Friday the 13th' series. I seriously dont know how people actually enjoyed this but if you want to rent it remember I WARNED YOU!
