Inspired by real events, writer/director Larysa Kondracki's intense docudrama tells the tale of an American policewoman who uncovers evidence of human trafficking while assisting a U.N. peacekeeping mission in Bosnia. Nebraska cop Kathy Bolkovac (Rachel Weisz) is caught in the middle of a vicious custody battle with her ex-husband when she seizes the opportunity to make a quick 100,000 dollars tax-free by spending six months in Bosnia as a U.N. peacekeeper. Shortly after Kathy arrives in Bosnia, Human Rights Commission head Madeleine Rees (Vanessa Redgrave) promotes her to the U.N.'s Gender Office, where she begins studying sexual-assault cases. But when Kathy discovers that her fellow peacekeepers are involved in a human-trafficking ring, the ensuing controversy makes her the target of some very powerful -- and incredibly ruthless -- people. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi
Violent and Troubling. I can't even imagine why I kept watching this movie except that the acting was so incredible. Rachel Weisz deserves an academy award for her performance as well as the young women portraying the victims. I was so troubled by this movie particularly because I was forewarned the story came from true events. The level of terror is beyond anything I have ever seen and have had disturbing dreams ever since. I would warn anyone about to see this film about the degree of violence if asked. The film probably deserves 5 stars but I just can't rate it 5 because of the effect it had on me.
Really well cast and kept up a good pace. I loved Rachel Weisz in this. Kind of kept me on the edge of my seat a bit, and then, at other times, seemed a bit of a stretch. Overall, I recommend it. Sure is an eye-opener.
The subject matter is of great importance. Not hard to believe, however, that this sort of misery goes on where women have a status lower than cockroaches. The acting is very good by all but the real focus is the story line. Rachel Weisz has the required intensity for this part. The love story was not needed.
Outstanding film. I am so glad to have seen it. A frank, honest expose of the illegal and immoral actions of international "peacekeepers." Based on a true story its is chilling and upsetting. A must see,
