Cannery Row (1982) Reviews

Cannery Row (1982)
Member Rating:
This highly anecdotal film centers upon Doc (Nick Nolte), a self-employed marine biologist who lives by the ocean and interacts with the neighborhood denizens, trying to conceal a troubled past. Across from Doc's digs stands the local bordello, the Bear Flag Restaurant. Across the entrance ambles Suzy (Debra Winger), a drifter who tries to become one of the girls and fails miserably. However, she does set her sights on Doc and acts accordingly. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

Excellent movie to watch and then go visit Monterrey's Cannery Row. Reminds me of older movies from the forties and fifties and was a good portrayal of the American hardships that Steinbeck loved to write about.

Wonderful movie! Good for all ages. Nolte and Winger never looked so handsome/lovely. Good Steinbeck writing.

this is one of my all time favorites. Love the characters and Nick Nolte and Debra Winger at their best. If you haven't seen it before, you'll have to watch it twice to take it all in. a lot of funny stuff not to be missed.

Steinbeck, Steinbeck, Steinbeck! Another time, Another Era. Nolte palys Doc to the hilt. And the raw earthy characters of Steinbeck are alive.

I adore this movie, even from the first time I saw it back in the mid-80's. It holds up fairly well after all these years. Great acting by both Debra Winger and Nick Nolte. They're both so young and gorgeous in this film. It's hard not to like every single character. They're so warm and poignant, you almost forget you're watching a story about homelessness people and prostitutes! This is classic John Steinbeck - lots of humor and empathy.
