Only the scenes of the ship foundering in the waves seem a bit phony i.e. a toy boat in a bathtub, compared to more recent movies of heavy seas...also a good story... The issues are as relevant today as at anytime in history, and Jose Ferer's drunken speech after the court martial is one of the most brilliant pieces of script writing coupled with an actor's performance, in all history. Civilian's think this is a movie about a stressed out power-mad Captain. Those of us who have served in the military however "get" it and can relate to folks we served with who had many of these traits - and what was really going on. I thought it was great then and seeing it now brought back a lot of memories. It is still a great movie of Navy life even if the Navy has never had a mutiny. All the actors and actress' did an excellent job in their roles. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No | ||

Every serious film viewer should see this movie. The gradual break down of Queeg played by Bogart is one of the best pieces of acting in any movie. This is an ensemble movie with top notch acting by all players. Van Johnson, Fred McMurray, and Jose Ferrer turn in stunning performances. If you wonder why you never saw the actor playing the young ensign again it is because he was killed in a small plane accident the year the film was released. Read More Based on Herman Wouk's book, I thought the story was a little choppy - the relationships with Willis' mother & girlfriend were not fleshed out. It was probably a great movie in '54 but just doesn't pass the test of time like other 40 & 50 films. Still it one of the better war movies made. A terrific performance by Bogart and lotsa 'character' actors who have made it big since. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No |
