A braggart meets his match in a courageous woman in this period drama from independent filmmaker Kelly Reichardt. It's 1845, and Stephen Meek (Bruce Greenwood) is a boastful, rough-hewn wilderness guide who has been hired by three families who want to start new lives on the other side of Oregon's Cascade Mountains. Meek constantly tells his charges that he knows the Oregon Trail like the back of his hand, but when they veer off for a shortcut he says is foolproof, they soon find themselves in forbidding territory, without water and with Indians on the horizon. While the men of the party travel with Meek, their wives are made to follow them in a separate wagon, and Emily Tetherow (Michelle Williams), the strong-willed wife of Solomon Tetherow (Will Patton), begins openly questioning Meek's competence among the other women, especially her friend Millie Gately (Zoe Kazan). While making their way through the wilderness, the party happens upon a Cayuse Indian (Rod Rondeaux); Meek captures the Indian and proposes they kill him, but Emily bravely speaks up for him, believing he has the right to live and perhaps the knowledge to lead them safely over the mountains. Meek's Cutoff was an official selection at the 2010 New York Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

I saw this movie at a theater - and no matter how hard I tried, I could not stop seeing Michelle Williams in her earlier comedy about Richard Nixon and Watergate. Was a weird, long, boring movie. I don't get the "artsy" in this movie at all, if there was any. The ending was absolutely PATHETIC ! Everyone around me left saying "Wha' ??" and scratching the tops of their heads. Disappointment to be sure. And Bruce Greenwood is going to have to get a better long-haired wig and beard - - very obvious it was all fake. I liked the attempt here - - but could have been MUCH BETTER !

A visually stunning, ethereal, and haunting allegory about trust, resolve, and survival in the old west. However, the story is ultimately marred by a frustratingly abrupt ending.

The sound was terrible and variable. The scenry was nice. But the story plods along and stops in the middle without conclusion, leaving you hanging after finally drawing you in. Now I know why it is called Meek's "Cuttoff"! I am sorry I wasted my time. If you want to make up your own ending, rent this movie.

Long, boring, and pointless. Don't waste your time.

This movie had a good plot, but was poorly written and directed. Had no idea why the night scenes were in total darkness, or why the movie ended with no ending.

Wish I had read the reviews before renting. This is the kind of movie you fall asleep to....or read a book to. Not good at all!

Horrible, pointless, boring movie. Much of it shot in the dark so you couldn't see much. Even the canary died of boredom! No "why" they were on the journey, no interesting ANYTHING during the journey, and the ending was totally anticlimactic. Just an awful waste of time. Don't bother unless you need something to lull you to sleep!

This movie was, in a word, horrible. The synopsis did give the basic plotlines--but you could never have gotten that background from watching the movie. The dialouge, such as it was, was terrible. They spoke in whispers most of the time and you couldn't follow it. The worst part of the movie was how much time it spent on the mundane. You had to painfully watch each of three women slowly cross a river carrying a bundle of whatever on their heads. The entire movie was like this--the actors doing some mundane task as the camera follows their every (non) move. The ending was just plain bad, also. It left a lot of questions--but none that you really cared about enough to discuss with fellow movie-goers afterwards. Just plain bad.

All they do is walk and talk looking for water. This movie sucked. Did they ever find water? Boring! Do Not Rent!
