A bullied little boy grieving the death of his mother strikes up an unlikely friendship with a Metallica-loving anarchist in this tender yet unsentimental childhood drama. In the wake of his mother's recent death, 13-year-old TJ (Devin Brochu) finds the bumpy road to emotional recovery all the more difficult due to the dual facts that he’s bullied at school and that his father (Rainn Wilson) has become a vacant pill-head. Just when it seems like things couldn’t possibly get any worse, TJ strikes up an unusual friendship with Hesher (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a greasy-haired anarchist with a beat-up van, homemade tattoos, and a soft spot for explosions. The next thing TJ knows, Hesher is sitting in his living room and watching porn on the family television. The story unfolds slowly. Hescher is supposedly the catalyst that propels this family into recovery from the mother/wife death. He is violent and unpredictable person who has rare moments of clarity. Through the whole movie I kept wondering why this family kept him around...or allowed him to move into their home in the first place. That made the movie untenable for me. However, I would watch anything with JGL in it. Anything. He is wonder.

Was this supposed to be funny? I'm missing something. Nat Portman served no purpose in this. Hesher is more like a tattooed and moron of a What About Bob. Sorry, but this is on the garbage pile. The Metallica at the closing credits was worth checking out.

This movie was sick and disgusting. There was nothing tender about it except that Devin Brochu was oddly compelling as the young victim. The rest of the characters were weak and self-serving. I'm surprised that Natalie Portman took this part.

I want to know what kind of world does this take place in? There is no hope in the entire movie. I honestly thought it was going to end up as a remake of "The Bodyguard" from the 1980's but no it's not. There is nothing but foul language including graphic sexual language. I am very unhapy with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Natalie Portman for even being involved in the project. There was no artistic value whatsoever. Do not watch this movie.

    Hesher is a likeable but unpredictable and sometimes violent agent of chaos and change in a family recovering from a tragic death. It's a well-written story, though odd and often dark. It will definitely hold your attention.
