Robert Redford focuses on the chaotic moment in history directly following President Lincoln's assassination to tell the story of the proud mother charged with committing the monumental crime, and the ambitious young lawyer who reluctantly becomes her defense attorney. The Civil War has ended, and upon returning home, Union War hero Frederick Aiken (James McAvoy) endeavors to enter the world of politics by establishing himself as a lawyer. Though a high-society ball provides Aiken with the unique opportunity to gain an audience with standing Secretary of War Edwin Stanton (Kevin Kline), history intervenes when John Wilkes Booth fires the fateful bullet that ends the president's life. The nation is soon engulfed in turmoil as a massive manhunt for Booth's collaborators commences, leading lawmen to Confederate sympathizer Mary Surratt (Robin Wright), whose son John has become a prime suspect, yet remains dubiously out of reach. Meanwhile, as the American public cries out for justice, former attorney general Reverdy Johnson (Tom Wilkinson) persuades Aiken to act as Mrs. Surratt's defense lawyer, and the mounting pressure both in and out of the courtroom begins to weigh on the conflicted barrister's conscience as the pressure turns up on John to give himself up, and save his mother from paying for his crime in the gallows. Kevin Kline, Alexis Bledel, Evan Rachel Wood, and Justin Long co-star. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Great movie for anyone interested in History. Not at all fast paced but you'll be entertained as you learn. Thought about it for days afterward. Well done as one expects from Redford.

Very, very good movie. The acting and the script were topnotch. I really got caught up in the drama of the moment and was very upset with the ending.

I had reservations regarding watching this movie. I thought it would be based on "theories" and not truth. I'm not a huge history buff, but I am interested in our presidents. Superb acting! Bottom line: WATCH THIS MOVIE! I have only given MAYBE three 5 stars rating for movies. This is one of them.

Fairly well done historical trial drama which reminds one of Arthur Miller's "The Crucible". Did Mary Surratt conspire with her son and John Wilkes Booth to assinate President Lincoln? She is unjustly put on trial and declared guilty by the panel of military soldiers and political lakeys even before being tried. A little too talky, but well acted by all and well directed by Robert Redford.

As a history buff, I loved this movie. Made me go out and research how correct the facts presented in the moviewere. Checked out completely from a historical point. PS. I lived in Surratsville (Clinton) MD for many years and was unaware of the many facets of this story.

An extremely well done, sobering movie with great acting, directing, scenery, etc., but more educational than entertaining as such, because it was pretty serious. As someone taking law classes now, I was particularly incensed at the egregious mistreatment afforded Mary Surratt in what I felt was a military kangaroo court. I was particularly angered at how Secretary of War Stanton abused the Constitution he no doubt swore to uphold.

Enjoyed the movie, but the 'history' is questionable...not that the realities of that war aren't gruesome enough.

Excellent movie! the whole story was an unknown to us,but very engaging once you get it. I would have given this a full five stars except that it was quite confusing to follow the plot line (looking up the true story after helped to explain alot so maybe read that first to appreciate thie better. Great acting, great scenes, great history lesson.
