Keeper of the Flame (1942)

If you're wondering what Citizen Kane might have looked like had it been produced by MGM, we submit for your approval Keeper of the Flame. War correspondent Spencer Tracy is assigned to write the life story of a recently deceased super-patriot. One would suppose that the much-beloved decedent's life would be an open book, yet his widow Katharine Hepburn refuses to release any details concerning her late husband. Tracy gains Hepburn's confidence, and she agrees to help him with his article. Several curious incidents lead Tracy to believe that Hepburn was in some way responsible for her husband's death. While this is not entirely the case, Tracy stumbles upon a truth that has been carefully hidden from the public by the dead man's "damage control" people. Adapted by Donald Ogden Stewart from a novel by I. A. R. Wylie, Keeper of the Flame is perhaps the most dour of the Tracy/Hepburn vehicles; those expecting the usual battle-of-the-sexes repartee between the two stars would be better off with Adam's Rib or Pat and Mike. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Good movie good acting great story (for 1942) It did seem to telegraph the end of the story.

Enjoyable story. Impressive assessment of socialist/ communist efforts to undermine America's will after the start of WW II but prior to our entry into war. Could be applied to many conflicts in many eras.

A very good movie. We enjoy watching the older movies as the acting seems better and the language isn't filled with profanities, Spence Tracy & Katharine Hepburn were certainly wonderful. Think you'll enjoy this one.

Definitely had that 'Citizen Kane' camera perspective and 'surrealistic' feel. Be prepared for both a propagandistic presentation, and an overly dramatic ending. For whatever reason, I'm not much of a Katharine Hepburn fan (if it wasn't for her voice I'm not sure she would have even been famous - but that's another issue). All in all interesting movie and well acted even if melodramatic to a fault.

Oh brother! It's no wonder I've never heard of this before. It is awful! Everyone makes heavy speeches, instead of talking, like they're all dragging great weights around. Turns out Robert Forrest was a crypto-fascist. and not the nice guy that people thought. There, you've seen it.

The story depicts integrity and courage which inspires people to be good. Bobbie C.
