THIS JUST IN: Three well known actors have been caught on tape in a movie for which I would have demanded my money back had I paid to see it in a theatre.

I caught myself looking at my watch several times during this one. The plot was a bit weak. If you live in the news media world you may love this, but it did nothing for me.

From the confusing intro, through a series of choppy transitions spiced with amateurish dialog and underdeveloped characterizations, topped off with a shaky plot, this wanna B movie should have remained in storage. It would have helped quite a bit if the male lead didn't speak with a mouthful of mush.

This picture has a lot going for it. The performances are all good, it's very witty with some hilarious moments, and there's a very smart, cynical commentary on media and the news that hasn't dated. What's kind of grating is the melodrama. It's sometimes too over-the-top, too sappy, and occasionally wallows too much in self-pity. Sometimes you feel real sympathy for the characters, but sometimes it's irritating how self-absorbed they can seem (maybe that's the point, how their personal lives overwhelm even as they're surrounded by big events in the news; still irritating how overcooked the melodrama can be). Regardless, it's still a pretty good picture.
