Brain Donors (1992)
Member Rating:
Brain Donors is a game attempt to redo the Marx Brothers' A Night at the Opera in a contemporary setting. John Turturro plays the "Groucho" character, a shifty lawyer (he's even given a Grouchoesque three-barrelled moniker). Bob Nelson is the "Harpo" counterpart, a puckish handyman. And Mel Smith completes the trio as a Chico-like cabbie. All three conspire to save a failing ballet company on behalf of dowager Nancy Marchand, who does a film-length impersonation of Margaret Dumont. At times, Pat Proft's script comes off more like a 3 Stooges short than a Marx Brothers romp, but that's not so bad. What hurts the film is its fluctuating pace, which shifts into neutral just when it should go into hyperdrive. Will Vinton's Claymation opening titles supply some of the film's biggest laughs. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

I saw this movie about 10 years ago and thought it funny, now that I'm all grown up this was a tribute to the classic slapstick comedies that made the Marks Brothers, Three Stooges and I Love Lucy great and timeless. Mind the PG rating, there is a little nudity, but in comedic taste. This movie is one joke, one prat fall, one prank after another and surprisingly it doesn't get old. The comedy is consistant and reaches a great climax at the end. If you love the Stooges, YOU HAVE TO SEE THIS MOVIE!!!

Saw this first when it first aired on a cable TV movie channel. It was amazing then. Just rented it again and it hasn't lost a touch. It is almost like a modern day "Duck Soup". Turturro is amazing. The ballet in the movie is without a doubt one of the funniest things I have ever seen. You will find things in the movie that you will be laughing about for the next 10 years. This movie is just amazing and it is a shame that a comedy like this is so rare.

This movie is a family favorite of ours. It isnt for everyone. I force everyone i know to watch it and you get two reactions. People either love it and buy it, or they hate it and never speak to me again. If you have a kinda of odd or rediculous sense of humor this movie is for you.

I found this movie on HBO accidently years ago. It is an obvious attempt to remake the Marx Brothers "A Night At The Opera", it isn't as good, but it is fun. John Tutturo is a great actor (Barton Fink) aside, and any movie the preserves the short lived comedic career of Bob Nelson is on my must have list.

Watch this movie if you don't take life too seriously and love little bits of dry humor....cannot stop laughing every time I watch this movie....while a nice looking girl is waiting for Turturro....yells at the guys..."Be down in 30 mins....give or take 29" classic material

Inspired by the Marx Bros' "A Night at the Opera", this 90s homage demonstrates twp things: imitation is the sincerest flattery, and you can't go home again. The actors are talented, the slapstick inventive, especially the ballet sequence, but there's just too much of everything. For instance, the claymation sequences for the opening and closing credits are nventive, but they don't really add to the movie; they would have been better as a separate short subject, and the music by Mark Mothersbaugh of Devo & Rugrats accalim doesn't match the humor. Still, the three principals were very funny in their respective Groucho, Chico, and Harpo roles, and Nancy Marchand was the perfect choice for the Margaret Dumont role. OK, so it's not perfect, but my kids & I laughed. Rent it and see for yourself.
