Monster's Ball producer Lee Daniels follows up his 2005 directorial debut, Shadowboxer, with this adaptation of author Sapphire's best-selling novel about an overweight, illiterate African-American teen from Harlem who discovers an alternate path in life after she begins attending a new school. Clareece "Precious" Jones is only a teenager, yet she's about to give birth to her second child. Unable to read or write, Clareece shows little prospect for the future until discovering that she has been accepted into an alternative school. There, with a little help from a sympathetic teacher (Paula Patton) and a kindly nurse (Lenny Kravitiz), the young girl receives something that most teens never get -- a chance to start over. Mo'nique co-stars in an inspirational drama featuring the debut performance of screen newcomer Gabourey "Gabbie" Sidibe. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi
I am not a big fan of Mo'nique. However I have to say that I felt she did a wonderful job in this movie. That was about all I can say about it. I thought the performance of the other actors ranged from forced to just plain bad. I fail to see the reason for all the fuss over Gabbie Sidibe. She is neither attractive nor a great actress.
The movie itself was confusing and I never did really figure out the point. It was depressing and lacking in any originality.
Would not watch this movie again.
Tyler Perry, what the heck happened? this movie was all over the place, Precious needs speech lesson's, i could not understand her at all with all the mumbling. Mo'nique played her role well. The flashback scenes were stupid, the story line flat and the ending had no closure. Not Oscar worthy material at all.
In the depths of an existence many people don't understand and cannot relate to, there is hope, incredible hope. It would be wonderful if the actual ending was even better than the one in the movie. Not a movie for everyone, but not a movie to dismiss out of hand.
Good, and a good performance by Gaborey. I little draggy and a bet choppy. I didn't think it matched up to other Oscar nominees but enjoyed it. It was depressing to think that people actually live like that

I wanted to love this movie, but not only did it NOT live up to the hype......it was below average. the acting was fine, but the screenplay/directing were on a third grade level. The flashback scenes were so incredibly simplistic adn amateurish, I was embarrassed for the production. If you would consider the movie Blind Side (which I saw wanting to dislike it!) could be compared in content to Precious (poor kid with 'issues' and how they eventually rise up above their surroundings)- then it would be scored, blind Side +10, Precious -10.
Thanks Oprah, for spreading more interest on garbage, than I can recall. Except for my netti pot, nothing you've recommended has lived up to the hype!
