A noble knight battles a wicked witch in a bid to save humanity from an ancient evil in this supernatural thriller starring Nicolas Cage and Ron Perlman. Upon returning to his home in Europe, crusading knight Behmen (Cage) finds his faith beginning to falter due to the brutality he's witnessed on the battlefield. The Black Plague has decimated the countryside, forcing Behmen and his loyal companion, Felson (Perlman), to seek sustenance and supplies at the Palace of Marburg. They're weary from war, but they're about to discover that their struggle is just beginning. Commanded by the moribund Cardinal to deliver a suspected witch to the abbey where her powers can be abolished, Behman accepts the assignment under the condition that the young peasant girl will receive a fair trial. The church believes the girl to be the one responsible for the Black Plague, and they may be right, too. As the two men and a small group of chaperones set out on their arduous mission, they quickly realize that their young charge is something more than human, and that they're about to face an evil beyond human comprehension. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

After reading reviews and commentary across the internet, my wife and I almost decided to wait for DVD. However, we decided to take a chance anyway. We were pleasantly surprised by the film. The storyline was good, with a couple slight twists to it. The movie was by no means at the level of LOTR, Avatar, or Underworld, but it was enjoyable to watch on the big screen.

I was rather discouraged by some of the reviews on this movie. I had hopes though and they definitely led me into the right theatre. Nicolas Cage isn't particularly my favorite actor or by any means the person I would cast for this film but it really wasn't as bad as people made it out to be. I saw this one in Arclight meaning I paid more to see it and frankly, I liked it a HELL of a lot more than I even like the latest Harry Potter (wasn't that a damn joke). If you're not into "godly" movies this one probably isn't going to be your cup of tea. I certainly am not into those types of movies but I love anything that looks even remotely scary, ie, the witch. As for the movie itself it had a decent plot. Somewhat typical and rather predictable but nothing horrific. Basically the movie is as described in the summary. And as Todd has written below, not to undermine him by any means, she is NOT the devil but instead a demon. All in all I was happy walking away from this movie. :]

It was good. The storyline was ok and interesting for a family in movie.

Ok for a rental and had some twists, although I'm not sure any of them were especially meaningful. Also, I had issue with the fact that the motifs were basically "murderers can find repetence as long as they start killing for the right cause". Also some of the ending thematics I had issue with. Seemed like a heavy-handed Iraq war propaganda film at the end. A much better film is "Brotherhood of the Wolf"

If you can suspend disbelief in all sorts of superstitions, and excuse Cage for his usual deadpan delivery, this really wasn't too bad. A formulaic story about demons taking over the world, possession, and exorcism.

Very good movie although a couple of the acting jobs weren't very good, ie: the captive "witch" Love knights and swords movies in general

The movie was ok. There are definitely some twists to the movie and it is good versus evil but the movie had a lot of long segways from one action scene to another so it would lose some of the build up that they had going until you could get back into it again, I guess what I am saying is that there were a lot of spans of time in the movie that just don't hold your attention enough. The acting was fair, the story fair, as a rental it is worth it, to pay more to see it I wouldn't bother.

Shameful. What a bitter disappointment. Don't waste your time or money. It might not even be worth your time on DVD. Cage's acting (and he is a favorite actor of mine) is questionable for someone who should be better than this. The supporting cast's acting is actually better than Cage's with one exception...Perlman is bad too. The story is dreadfully simple. Cage and Perlman are deserters from the Crusade. They get caught and part of their deal for being pardoned of this crime is that they must take a witch to a far off monastery to be judged and sentenced. She's not a witch, but The Devil. A magic book is read from and the Devil turns to cinder, but not before everybody dies. The end. I honestly cannot think of one thing that is redeeming. If you like Cage, don't see this because you may reconsider your opinion of his professional choices. PS Maybe we now know why it had problems being released!
