The central premise of the Kirkwood-Dante-Kleban-Hamlisch Broadway musical A Chorus Line is by now overly familiar, examining as it does the 17 actors auditioning for spots in a chorus line on the Great White Way. Recalling Donn Pennebaker's Moon Over Broadway and other similar efforts, documentarians Adam Del Deo and James D. Stern's film Every Little Step travels behind the scenes of the auditions for 2006 revival of A Chorus Line to investigate the goings-on and the interplay among the hopefuls. The film thus establishes a neat corollary between the events of the play itself and the offstage experiences of the aspiring tryouts. On top of this, Stern and Del Deo work in a layer that pertains to the original genesis of the show, and its evolution from an idea by Michael Bennett, who recorded an ensemble of dancers speaking confessionally and used that as the basis for everything else. Here, the filmmakers play those original tapes back, on-camera, thus resurrecting old ghosts; score composer Marvin Hamlisch also turns up and revokes the past, courtesy of a revealing and racy little nugget about the history of the tune "Dance: Ten; Looks: Three." Above all else, the film works in extensive footage of the auditions themselves, on songs such as "At the Ballet" and "I Can Do That" -- thus interweaving an aura of suspense throughout the narrative over who will eventually wind up in the production itself. The title of the documentary, of course, is a reference to the lyric of the seminal tune "One" ("One singular sensation, every little step she takes"). ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

For those of you who love Broadway, are old enough to remember what it was like in the 70s, and saw Chorus Line, you'll really love this. I thoroughly enjoyed it, to my surprise.

If you like Broadway musicals and human interest stories, tis is the documentary for you. It is an excellent report of how the original Chorus Line came to be and a suspensful story of the revival casting. It also contains excellent insights into original cast members.

An actor who can sing, dance, and reduce a panel of directors to tears with a monologue, as the one who won the role of Paul did, is a real treasure. All of the final cast members were nearly as compelling. I rented the DVD to see Marvin Hamlisch and listen to his music, but everything about this documentary is amazing. A must-see for any drama class or aspiring performer.

If you love Broadway, if you love dancing, if you love A CHORUS LINE, this is perfect. Well executed story of how a chorus line is chosen for a chorus line. If only they could have been chosen, yet, in a way, they were. LOVED it.

If you are a fan of "A Chorus Line", you will really enjoy this movie. It is fun to see if you agree with the cast they chose for the revival.

My husband and I loved this movie! The format and music was wonderful. You got a good idea of how grueling and difficult and yet exhilerating the life of a dancer must be. We'd recommend this one highly!

A familiar but moving story of the life of actors/actresses trying to get a part.

A season of American Idol, dance version, in 2 hours. Not being an Idol fan I found it boring. But, by the end, I was actually rooting for my favorites.
