Born in East L.A. (1987)
Member Rating:
Richard "Cheech" Marin, of Cheech & Chong fame, directed and starred in Born in East L.A.. Inspired by Marin's music-video parody of Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the USA", the film casts Cheech as an East Los Angeles repairman. While paying a visit to a sweatshop toy factory, Cheech is caught in the middle when the feds raid the place and cart off all the illegal alien workers. Since he's forgotten to bring his own i.d., Cheech is also shipped off to Mexico-where, having next to no knowledge of the Spanish tongue, he's virtually helpless. Desperate, he takes a job with crooked Tijuana saloon owner Daniel Stern-the first of many "make-do" jobs that he assumes to earn enough money to return home. Along the way, he falls in love with El Salvadorian girl Kamala Lopez, whose English is as fractured as Cheech's Spanish. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This movie is basically a spoof on illegal immigration and the bureaucracy associated with many of the US immigration laws. The traditional cheech and chong style satire is fully intact. Overall, a great family movie full of laughs. The only downside is that this DVD, which is the only released DVD, lacks around 20-30 minutes of footage where Cheech and his lady flee from some coyote guerilla types, which is usually shown on television. Instead, this DVD shows cheech making it across the border, then randomly popping out of a sewer, which is explained in context when combined with the missing footage.

One of the funniest movies I have ever seen. Paul Rodriquez did a fantastic job. I liked feo as well. Rent it if you like Cheech Marin movies.

This is not the whole movie. About ten minutes of footage missing from the VHS version. What about the coyotes at the end? what about the wedding?

I love everything about this film..but more so Cheech was LIGHT YEARS ahead of his time in terms of capturing the spirit of the illegal immigration issue through comedy.

Great, lighthearted movie--good for lots of laughs. Especially funny if you've ever lived in Southern California or anywhere in the Southwest U.S.

Outstanding film. Cheeh Marin is stand alone funny. It is a nice departure from previous "Cheech and Chong" films. It's almost a rom-com. Daniel Stern (Home Alone) is also fantastic in this picture. A real homerun
