Judge Haywood... the reason I asked you to come: Those people, those millions of people... I never knew it would come to that. You must believe it, You must believe it!
Judge Dan Haywood: Herr Janning, it "came to that" the first time you sentenced a man to death you knew to be innocent. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

The acting is lifelike and you feel you are actually there. No doubt one of the top 3 films I've ever seen. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More Fascinating. Spencer Tracy seems born to the role of the American lead jurist presiding over an international criminal tribunal in the case of four former jurists who, in a perverted display of German "patriotism", sentenced thousands of innocent citizens to forced sterilizations or execution for "crimes" committed under the infamous Nuremberg laws. Maximilian Schell won Best Actor for his commanding performance as the German defense attorney whose logical arguments nearly swayed the court in his clients' favor. The film shows how behind-the-scenes politics (in 1949, the Cold War was commencing) also came close to influencing the trial's outcome: Some were recommending acquittal so as to enlist the aid of the German people in combatting the emerging Communist threat in Europe. In one scene, an American officer posits, "The thing to do is survive, isn't it?" The comparison to German citizens looking the other way while war-time atrocities were being committed is implicit.
