The Blues Brothers (1980) Reviews

The Blues Brothers (1980)
Member Rating:
Expanding on their Saturday Night Live characters, John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd star as Jake and Elwood Blues, two white boys with black soul. Sporting cool shades and look-alike suits, Jake and Elwood are dispatched on a "mission from God" by their former teacher, Sister Mary Stigmata (Kathleen Freeman). Said mission is to raise $5000 to save an orphanage. In the course of their zany adventures, the Blues Brothers run afoul of neo-Nazi Henry Gibson, perform the theme from Rawhide before the most unruly bar crowd in written history, and lay waste to hundreds of cars on the streets and freeways of Chicago. In case you aren't swept up in the infectuous nuttiness of the brothers Blue, you might have fun spotting film's legion of guest stars, including James Brown, Cab Calloway, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, John Candy, Carrie Fisher, Steve Lawrence, Twiggy, Paul Reubens (aka Pee-Wee Herman), Frank Oz, and Steven Spielberg. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This movie was based on a group that started out as comedians on a live skit-show. The Mission From God isn't the story here, it's a vehicle to tie together great performances from all types of music, while paying homage to musicians who still inspire today. Yes there are police car chases, with huge pile-ups...hey it was the early eighties (Smokey & the Bandit, Dukes of Hazard, Cannonball Run). You gotta love a movie that mocks supremacy groups when it isn't promoting brotherhood by singing and dancing - together. Quote "...And by the year 2006 the blues will only exist in your local public library... " Dan "Elwood" Aykroyd . This is a great movie for bringing the Blues back to life.

Better than I remembered; it should be an AFI classic. Imagine James Brown, Cab Calloway, John Lee Hooker, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, John Bellushi and Dan Aykroyd in one movie!

The Blues Brothers, my child hood favorite. This is one movie i can watch over and over and will never get tired of it. My favorite part of the movie is when Jake and Elwood went to church.

This DVD was cracked. I will be reporting the problem and closing my account as we frequently get cracked DVDs in the mail and DVDs that simply don't play on our machine. Goodbye.

i actually got to see the movie on the big screen last weekend and it really "blew my mind". I can never get sick of this movie, or the music (my 12 year old son is now into the blues brothers). Dan and John both are fantastic singers (and john just blows me away when he's in front of that microphone). It s just a fun movie with great actors and great legends. It's just a shame that John isnt' around to see all the success the movie has had. GO SEE THE MOVIE!!

Have you ever seen an SNL-based movie with a plot? I mean, a good one? Blues Brothers, the first movie based on characters made funny on SNL, has a very standard concept -- save an orphanage by having a benefit concert. Nevertheless, the story itself isn't that strong. That said, don't watch this movie expecting an Oscar-winning storyline, but do watch it if you love musicals, music, or just fun in general. It's over-the-top fun at its best, with a bunch of recognizable faces. This is a movie to treasure, if only because of how immense certain scenes are (the last 15 minutes are just ridiculous in scope). Long story short: just enjoy!

I don't get it. Somehow I managed to get into my mid-30's without having seen this movie all the way through. Everyone kept saying I had to see it . I watched it. The movie's legend is way better than the movie. It's a "you-had-to-be-there" movie -- something that if you didn't see when it was popular, it probably won't appeal to you much. If you've never seen this movie and are being pressured by your friends to see it, go ahead. Maybe this review can help lower the standard a little bit and make it possible for you to enjoy it.
